Services
Expat CPA is a California-based certified public accounting firm dedicated to serving the American expatriate community. We have been providing this service since 1994 and we have American expatriate clients living in every major country of the world. Our United States location offers us access to ongoing, superior training regarding U.S. expat tax law.
All expats who meet the minimum requirements for their filing status and age are required to file a federal tax return. Not all states require that expats file a return, but if yours does, we can help you prepare and file your state return. Small business owners must file returns for any business (other than a sole proprietorship) that is considered a separate entitiy.
Yes, filing taxes overseas is necessary if you would be required to file while living in the United States. The law requires that American citizens and resident aliens who live abroad must follow the same rules for filing income, estate and gift tax returns as those living in the United States. Regardless of where you currently reside, your worldwide income is subject to U.S. income tax.
If you live overseas, do you pay state taxes? The answer depends on the state. Some U.S. citizens and residents living abroad must file a state tax form, but not all expats are required to do so. Whether or not U.S. expats need to file a state income tax return depends on which state they lived in before their move to another country.
U.S. citizens and residents who are officers, directors or shareholders in certain foreign corporations must file Form 5471 as part of their expat tax return. If you are living abroad and operating a business from a foreign country, you must file a U.S. federal tax return if you own at least 10 percent of a foreign corporation, and your return must include Form 5471.

There are many companies out there with a similar name ----- I think the reviews below are for a different company. ExpatCPA has been extremely helpful in making a very complicated process, easy! It's a big stress relief knowing I am compliant with the law, and ExpatCPA has been helpful answering the many questions I have had trying to better understand the process. I would highly recommend them and will file with them again in 2021!

This outfit knows nothing about foreign tax systems although they call themselves Expat CPA. I ended up paying thousands of dollars more in Japanese taxes because they did not advise me on how to file my foreign taxes or whether I even had to. Only after I was slapped with $5000 in Japanese taxes did they say `I really don't understand your issue.' The front guy Lewis is not even a CPA, although he calls himself one. These people can file your American taxes as anyone can using Turbo. But forget about getting any foreign tax advice. User be ware.

I don't recommend this business. They are very dishonest, vague and misleading with their pricing. They charged me thousands of dollars without my knowledge, and for forms that are not even necessary. I am trying to get a refund through BBB. Be aware and don't give out your credit card to them without having a signed price quote or agreement from them.
