We are the premier self-defensive martial arts school in the Upstate of South Carolina, serving Greenville, Anderson, and Pickens Counties. The styles we teach are Shorindokai Karate, Kodokan Judo, and TFC Jujitsu. The main style, Shorindokai Karate, is a true mixed martial art that combines throws, joint locks, take downs, kicks, and hand techniques into an eclectic fighting system.

Shorindokai Karate was developed specifically for real life self-defense, and utilizes modified techniques primarily from the styles of Judo, Jujitsu, Tae Kwon Do, and Shorin-ryu Karate. Our approach to training is twofold; practical self-defense and self-improvement. Given the dangerous world in which we live, our goal is for our students to be able to defend themselves effectively if ever attacked.
Services
We are accredited and affiliated with the World Wide Martial Arts Association (WWMAA) originally founded as the United States Martail Arts Association (USMAA). In Memorium to our mentor and friend, O'Sensi Porter, who's guidance and leadership were instrumental in the development of Shorindokai Karate.
A realistic, self-defensive martial arts program designed to give our students the skills necessary to recognize and avoid conflict, as well as defend themselves if a situation becomes physical. Students learn the art of Shorindokai Karate, which encompasses techniques from Judo, Jujitsu, Taekwondo, and Shorin-ryu Karate.
Our methods of practice honor our diverse student community. We recognize that students are individuals at different places in life, practicing for various reasons, to achieve different goals. Through our goal-oriented training, we inspire all students to continually progress, break through barriers, tap into undiscovered talent, & ultimately empower themselves with abilities for life-long success.
Martial arts is for anyone who wants to improve themselves. Our school welcomes everyone-people of all shapes, sizes, ages, mental/physical capabilities, fitness levels, genders, & ethnicities- to come practice together. We have classes for children, teens, adults & families, beginning at 5 years old.

My daughter is taking karate here and we started last month in November. From the minute we walked through the door we felt very welcomed. Affordable and the instructors are very kind and knowledgeable. I highly recommend!

We knew that Shorindokai Karate had a great reputation but i wasn't expecting my son to enjoy himself and learn so quickly. My son cooperates more at home and at school since attending Karate. I am so pleased with the way the instructor teaches, he is dedicated, patient and does an amazing job teaching our child Karate. We highly recommend Shorindokai Karate it's a blessing to have him in our son's life.

They have interesting teaching methods in this studio. Very condescending toward children and still using backwards phrases like “don’t kick like a girl”. When I brought up that it was offensive he basically told me that he intentionally uses offensive and angering phrases with the Kids to help them learn how to control their emotions. He also justifies his bullying behavior be saying that kids are bullied in school anyway and bullies say much worse. I pulled my kids out 3 lessons in to the trial month because we had had enough. There is never a need to put down children, make them feel small

It’s been hard to get my son to engage in extracurricular activities in the past, but he really looks forward to his time at Shorindokai. Josh Owens is a patient but firm instructor who gives praise when praise is due. I would highly recommend anyone looking for martial arts classes to try Shorindokai.

I have been going to this school for years. I loved it and sent my own children there to build their confidence and learn to combat bullies in school if that were ever to arise. If you can get passed the mental and physical challenges, the martial arts is a fun sport. Mr. Owens is always willing to work with anyone before or after class and is a great teacher. He tries to make the classes fun with his sarcasm and wit. From what I have seen his staff has always been respectful and kind to all who have walked through the door. That said, self defense is not for the feint of heart. IMO if you or your

My kids started this school to know how to combat bullying and gained so much more. He teaches hard work, discipline, respect, self worth and self control, how to handle a failure and much more. This made my children better wiser people. I would recommend this school to anyone. Mr Owens and staff are wonderful people.

I love this school. My son has been taking classes for 2 1/2 years and branched out into Judo and Leadership classes as well. The instructor is amazing and puts his all into teaching the Art of self defense, respect and honor. In class and out of class. My son has excelled in his discipline and self confidence. I have recently joined myself and am enjoying learning as well. This is not just for children, it is awesome for adults as well! If you are considering taking Martial Arts, this is the school you want to come to.
