Our highly trained pediatric dental team is dedicated to serving Southern Maryland's children, so that they will have healthy smiles that will last a lifetime. We perform evidence-based dentistry and abide by the guidelines and recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and American Dental Association.
According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, your child's first dental visit should be within 6 months after the first tooth appears, or no later than his/her first birthday. At Smile Castle, we believe that it's never too early to start a lifetime habit of good dental health.
If not cared for properly, baby teeth can develop cavities that can cause pain and infection, and if not treated properly, these may adversely affect your child's permanent teeth.During the baby wellness checkup, we will perform a comprehensive oral examination, give oral hygiene and dietary recommendations, provide anticipatory guidance regarding the development of teeth, and provide guidance towards habit management.

As Office Manager at Smile Castle, Carlie says, She loves working for a dentist that shares the same values and love for children as she does. Working for Dr. Hwang is so rewarding! She strives to ensure all of our patients are taken care of from the moment they walk in the door. Carlie graduated from Salisbury University with a Bachelor's Degree in Biology.
We know our parents lead busy lives, therefore our office will make every effort to schedule your child's appointment for a time that is convenient to your schedule. Preschool children should be seen in the morning because they are fresher and we can work more slowly with them for their comfort. School children with a lot of dental work needing to be done should be seen in the morning for the same reason.
Our office, as well as the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the American Dental Association (ADA), and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) all recommend establishing a "Dental Home" for your child by one year of age. Children who have a dental home are more likely to receive appropriate preventive and routine oral health care.

Entering into the dental office clean, warm greeting, and pleasant staff. Although, I was running behind, I was indeed grateful for my kids to be seen. The dental hygienist and doctor did an outstanding job. Why? My oldest, is absolutely petrified of the dentist and 0 tolerate of pain. My oldest rejoice it was over with no pain. Thank you😊!

I took all three of my kids to have cleanings done a few days ago. The staff was all very friendly and professional, the building was very clean and everything was organized. All three of my kids were seen by three different hygienists at once and two had xrays as well. They were in and out within about 30 minutes and I was highly impressed. My kids always feel at ease coming here too and I personally really appreciate that!

First ever dentist visit with 15 month old. Arrived to 12pm appointment and was out the building by 12:20. My son was very nervous and put up quite the fight getting his teeth brushed but the assistants and dentists were all so understanding and professional. They even gave him the cutest prizes. Looking forward to our next appointment!

We love Smile Castle! I have one nervous kiddo that is always put at ease by the great practices and friendly staff walking her through every step of a great check-up. I also have another one kiddo that is excited to wake up and go get her smile checked and complimented by the kind and efficient staff helping us through the checkup. The office has been very accommodating to modified schedules through thorough communications via text which are super helpful and someone is always quickly available to respond and give me feedback. They truly make this a painless process and I highly recommend them

My son has had awful experiences in the past at non-pediatric dentists. When we moved here, Smile Castle helped to re-do a filling and then also an abscess and tooth abstraction. The abstraction was done in April 2020 covid times. We were the only ones in there. Appropriate for that time period.
Every visit has been awesome. I never feel judged that my son or daughter scream or are scared. The dentists, staff and hygienists are friendly and understanding. They are patient with my children to help them understand what they are doing and why teeth cleaning is important. Can't recommend this

The first time we we went my son had a dentist with the personality of a log, definitely not suited for children. My SPD son freaked out and screamed the whole time. We have since scheduled with anyone but him. We had two wonderful women dentists. All of the staff that works the front desk are aaamazing. The hygienists are also ridiculously amazing and wonderful with children. We had to reschedule our last appointment for my 5 year old and 18 month old due to the tummy bug. They were more than understanding. I got the time wrong for the initial appointment and put it in my calendar wrong.. we

Great environment, plenty of play area for the little ones while you wait, technicians were super friendly and the dentist was straightforward and gentle.
Awesome checkup for my little one while his teeth are coming in. Provided his opinion on any need for fluoride supplements, and info on the timing for the rest to come in.
Plus, a small toy at the end. My son couldn't have had a better time.

Dr. Hwang and her staff are the best! We've gone to many in our travels with the Air Force and I would say that she really runs a top rate practice. Her office is spotless and they are careful about not putting a gloved hand in your child's mouth after touching tables or cabinets to retrieve supplies. They also wipe down exam chairs. I have left many dentists because these basic rules are not followed. She does an excellent job of seeing patients quickly, offering good ideas to increase oral health, and keeping the cost down. We were visiting my family in Leonardtown, Maryland over the Labor Day holiday weekend and my daughter had an accident and moved her front tooth. We called the emergency line and although we were not registered patients we were quickly contacted by Dr. Hwang. She listened to our explanation of the accident and her tooth placement and she asked that we send pictures for her to see. She responded quickly and reassured us that our daughter would be OK. My daughter liked the place and the dentist. That said, I just received an explanation of benefits from my insurance company for the visit and that total bill was over $400 for a preschooler's cleaning (no x-rays, no cavities). They charged for nutritional counseling and for oral hygiene instruction which she also did not need. This was her third dental visit and her teeth are healthy. They knew that insurance companies do not cover these services. I am not sure yet what they expect me to pay but I will not pay the remaining $300 that the insurance is not covering.
