At Asheville Academy of TaeKwonDo we offer martial arts classes for women, men, and children of all ages. Martial arts practice is a great way to get in shape while learning self defense, self discipline and building confidence. We have been Asheville's premier martial arts school since 1991. We teach TaeKwondo, Hapkido (self-defense), Tai Chi, Qigong and boxing basics in a supportive and encouraging environment.
We are conveniently located in Asheville at 237 Sardis Road and offer classes in the afternoon, evenings, and weekends. At the Asheville Academy of Taekwondo we offer classes 5 days per week to accommodate all ages and stages of life. Our classes are for children ages 5-12, teens, and adults. Every class is planned to include aspects of traditional martial arts training, self defense, physical fitness, and fun!

Services
Our school was opened by Master Richard Tener in August of 1991. After 29 years of service to the Asheville area, Master Tener passed the Academy on to Mr. Paul Toney, who currently owns and runs the school. We are under the auspices of the American Taekwondo Foundation and the World Taekwondo Federation.
To provide a vehicle for the mental, emotional, and physical development of all those involved. Here at the Asheville Academy of Taekwondo, we feel that training in the martial arts should provide so much more than just learning to kick and punch. Our training programs also offer a good physical fitness program that includes a system of self defense training.
My goal is to help children build a strong character in a positive environment. Teaching discipline and coordination is a challenge I enjoy. As an instructor of Taekwondo, I'm constantly reminded that personal success comes from helping others reach their goals. The American Taekwondo Foundation (ATF) was founded by Grand Master Y.S. Chung in 1988.

Our children's program focuses on building a foundation of skills that your children can take with them throughout their life.

I’ve loved taking classes here. I joined this past year and everyone at Asheville Academy of Tae Kwan Do has welcomed me in. It already feels like a real community for me. Everyone is very kind and friendly. AATKD is serious about TKD while still being fun and giving a rejuvenating workout. So grateful for this place!

My grandson Ryan has been a student at Asheville Academy of Taekwondo since November 2017. I have attended nearly all of his practices, all his colored belt testings, and all his tournament participation’s. I participated in high school and college athletics and coached at the middle school and youth levels. I have a lot of experience to draw from in my observations of Master Richard Tener, his facility, and all the highly qualified students, youth and adult, who share with him in the instructon at his school. Everything is both age and skill level appropriate, and there there is an actively

We moved to the area about a year ago, and my then 13 year old daughter was very sad about leaving her taekwondo home. After visiting several taekwondo academies in the area, my daughter completely fell for this place and so did I! Master Tener is awesome with the kids- so helpful and patient, and teaches them lessons that are valuable in all aspects of their lives. Also small class sizes ensure that everyone gets the attention and help they need. I can't speak enough great things about this place! Love it!!

He is awful. Gave up on my granddaughter. He is for the people with money. Because she has ADHD he wouldn't teach her. This place doesn't practice the tenants at all.
But now she goes to a better class and is progressing well. Hate this place.
If you have money then you will be fine here. But us poor folks he looks down on and gets you to quit.

My son and I joined the Asheville Academy of Taekwondo 3 years ago. This school has a family spirit and offer a lot of personal growth for kids and adults in a safe and friendly environment. It is just challenging enough for mental and physical growth but never more than one can handle. I am getting much more fun than any fitness club I have been to. Master Tener Owner , Alex Jones, Chief Instructor and all the other great instructors are ALWAYS here to help and very patient with their teaching. I love that school and all the very good friends I made there. I highly recommend that Taekwondo school
