Back when lawyers had to use carbon paper to copy contracts and legal briefs, my grandfather had his own practice. With strong family ties to the legal profession, my interest in law was sparked from a young age. I pursued an undergraduate degree in political science at DePauw University, where I graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1977.
It's a common misconception that you don't need to think about estate planning until much later in life. I try to remind all of my clients that it's important to have a plan in place, regardless of your age, should the inevitable happen sooner than expected. Creating an estate plan is important for anyone who has assets they wish to pass on, whether they have a modest or large estate.
End-of-life planning, wills and trusts, and Estate Planning go hand in hand. Estate planning is primarily about how your property and wealth will be handled after death. It's about making sure your loved ones are taken care of after death. Proper estate planning can avoid disputes among your surviving family members.
A probate may be necessary to transfer assets after the death of a loved one. We recommend you talk with an attorney and take care of your Estate Planning needs as soon as possible. You May Need Probate If the Estate Has over $75,000 in Personal Property or $100,000 in Real Property. Your heirs may need to open a probate if your estate exceeds over $75,000 in personal property or $100,000 in real property.
Imagine your loved one has suffered a stroke and cannot communicate. They need medical attention. Questions need to be answered. What do you do? A Medical Power of Attorney and a Living Will prepared in advance will keep your loved ones from guessing what kind of care you would like.
If you have prepared a Medical Power of Attorney and a Living Will, you will know who is in charge and what to do because your loved one will have already told you in the legal papers expertly prepared by our office.I'm an experienced estate planning attorney and can prepare these documents for you.
