Gray's Funeral Home, founded in 1895, was the first funeral home owned and operated by an African American on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Mills Gray built the structure at 643 Randolph Avenue. In the back yard the building used for embalming and preparing the dead for burial still stands. Thomas L. Godwin, also of Cape Charles, supplied Gray with cement burial vaults.

Most of us plan ahead in life. We plan for our wedding, our children's education, family vacations, and other significant expected life events. We also plan for the unexpected events of life by purchasing home, auto and medical insurance. Understanding the benefits of pre-planning has prompted many to take the step to plan their own arrangements.
Many who have undergone the emotional strain of arranging a funeral within hours of losing a loved one have made the choice to pre-plan their own funeral. Doing so lifts the burden from their loved ones by relieving decision-making pressure at a time of grief and emotional stress. Funeral arrangements are a deeply personal choice.

My mother chooses this place years before she passed away. The owner’s wife said she and my mom were long-time friends. No one in our family could recall this friendship. If there was possible way to give a half star, I would. We were disappointed with Gray Funeral Home's appearance and services. We discussed having an outdoor memorial (because this was the height of Covid-19 )service that required wifi for Zoom and or Youtube viewing. The owner and his wife guaranteed outdoor memorial service at Gray’s location. We were from out of town coming from different states. We never saw the site and
