During the period when the eventual state of Oklahoma was considered "Indian Territory, " members of the Choctaw Tribe who had been transplanted from the southeastern part of the nation resided near the future site of Clayton.Clayton was named after the busy St. Louis suburb of Clayton, Missouri, which was in turn named in honor of a farmer, Ralph Clayton, who donated land to help establish the city.
