The Meyer Funeral Home, located at 307 West Jourdan Street in Newton, IL has been serving Jasper County in the same location since 1931. The business was originated by George Markwell on the square in Newton sometime during the 1910s or 1920s. In 1931 his son Louis Markwell purchased the former Laugel Family Home which was built in 1894 and converted it into the Markwell Funeral Home.
Mr. Markwell operated the business until 1941 when he sold the business to Dean Parker. Mr. Parker operated the business until 1959 when he sold it to a funeral director named Jim Flagg. Mr. Flagg operated the business until 1969 when he sold it to Jim Buchanan of Robinson, Illinois. In that same year, the Buchanan Family hired a funeral director from Effingham, Illinois named Darrel Holland who had been employed at Bauer Funeral Home.

Understanding the benefits of pre-planning has prompted many to take the step to plan their own arrangements.
Many who have undergone the emotional strain of arranging a funeral within hours of losing a loved one have made the choice to pre-plan their own funeral. Doing so lifts the burden from their loved ones by relieving decision-making pressure at a time of grief and emotional stress. Funeral arrangements are a deeply personal choice.
