Since 1953 Hickory Log has served Dexter and the surrounding area. Famous for barbecue ribs has been our slogan for many years and ribs are certainly what we sell the most of. We do offer a full menu, but always focus on bbq as our main items. We are a family owned, independent restaurant and we welcome your visit!.
Services
Hickory Log is owned and operated by John and LaVeda Banken, they have now been a part of the ownership since 1967. The restaurant is a down home family owned and run business, managers include sons, Jason Banken and Lance Banken, now even the grandkids are working too! Our own blend of special spices and the slow real wood cooking results in the original Dexter Hickory Log ribs that are known throughout the United States.
Your favorite ribs cut off the bone in bite size pieces, and served on a bed of lettuce with shredded cheese, carrots, purple cabbage, tomatoes, and a boiled egg. Mesquite chicken, Monterey jack cheese, jalapenos, and onions rolled in a flour tortilla, fried and topped with shredded cheese. Three thin slices of smoked pork shoulder, grilled and topped with our homemade barbecue sauce, plus two side dishes.

Food was adequate. Our smoked sirloin was more than well done and dry. We didn’t care for what they called bbq sauce and “butterly tasting spread” and sour cream had to be dug out of small containers that then littered the table. Coffee was gross.
Our server was uncooperative and untrained. She brought our pie and coffee before clearing dinner dishes and trash.i can’t list every issue we had with her. I usually tip 20%+ but couldn’t bring myself to, she needs to do better.
Not a pleasant experience. Apparently anything but a glowing review gets you a thumbs down or frown from the owner

This is an annual tradition for my family since I was a kid. This year our ribs were heavy on rub, which turned off my daughter, but wasn't a problem for the rest of us. The ribs were very tender this year. The macaroni and cheese is not good. Do not get it unless you have a kid that won't eat anything else. The fried broccoli is always a delight as are the fried mushrooms. I don't know why the broccoli comes with sweet and sour sauce. I mixed it up this year and got a loaded baked potato. Not worth the 1.30 they charge you for a sprinkle of cheese and a couple bacon bits and pre

Great atmosphere for family dining. Christmas decorations are amazing. We weren’t blown away by the ribs (the main ticket menu item they’re bragging about) as some so dry it was difficult to get off the bone. One (pictured) had obviously been on a warmer for a looong time and although it sounds really snooty to say, really not good enough to eat. That being said, some ribs were great and totally worth bragging about.

Very cozy environment with friendly staff to make you feel at home. Must say the Rib salad, mesquite chicken rolls, and sirloin were melt in your mouth delicious. Even though we went right at closing time we didn’t feel rushed and the food and service was still great. The Christmas decor is beautiful and great for family pictures.

Hickory Log is such a Dexter staple! If it ever closed it would be like a piece of my childhood dying because I've been eating here since I was a kid. If I've eaten at Hickory Log once, I've eaten there 100 times. I don't remember ever getting bad service, the food always comes out quickly, and they are always fast to fix anything.
They've gotten a lot of flak about their quality since Dexter BBQ opened across the street. The ribs have seemed to decline a bit in quality and my guess would be because of the decrease in foot traffic. IMO, they're still quite good.

Had lunch at the HL. In this small town, it is kind of like a landmark. It is not like having lunch at the Ritz Carlton but when in Dexter-this is the place you have to try at least once. I once heard the famous STL Cards announcer talk about the ribs from Hickory Log on a STL cards broadcast. So my recommendation is the ribs. The special was affordable and the special was 2 ribs and a baked potato. It filled my family up that ordered it. Be sure to check out the Tiki Bar where you will see great Dexter Bearcats hanging on the wall. The town's high school has small shrine there. Glory days

It has been years. but this place used to deliver to the airport as we did private pilot flight training there. many times, we would take 6 or 10 racks home to St Louis and enjoy!
Their ribs are dry rubbed... so you MUST like salt and seasoning. They are also not super tender. They could use more time in the smoker to tenderize, but the smoke flavor itself is strong... and that is the most important thing. BBQ is smoking. Period. No smoke. No stars.

This place had the worst ribs I have had. They were very tough and it took a knife to cut them off the bone. I went off their web site and thought this would be a good stop. They had awards on the wall and the place was empty at lunch on a week day. This was a big disappointment. I don't know if this was a bad day or what. Since 1953 hooked me and I was in the Dexter Mo area I thought this was going to be good. This was a year ago and I will be in the area this year again but I would not go back.
