BISTRO 1888 offers an array of tantalizing dishes that showcase Chef Moorefield's Infused New American Cuisine. The menu features a selection of fresh seafood, aged steaks, chops, handcrafted pastas and vegetarian dishes who preparations encompass Mediterrancean, Pacific Rim, classic French, Caribbean and Northwestern traditions.

Everything is made from 'scratch' daily utilizing the freshest and highest quality ingredients available. We both grew up in Halifax County, had enjoyable careers elsewhere for 18+ years and moved back home to be near our respective families. We first met in 2001. With Margaret's award winning culinary skills and Barbara's marketing background, we wanted to offer the rural county of 37,000 an upscale restaurant.
Whenever you're in South Boston, put this on your must do list. The menu was a good size with a little something for everyone; fish, steaks, pasta, vegetarian, etc. The service was par excellence. Food was delicious and beautifully presented. Casual dress is ok. This casual but attractive space with a sophisticated and energetic vibe had an original menu with mouth watering combinations that made decision making a challenge.
The Opus Room is THE premier private dining from for miles around, tastefully designed with an Art Deco motif and fully appointed with everything for a great event. The 28 x 22' room differentiates itself from others with it beauty and its spaciousness to socialize with guests before dinner.

The social area is comprised of a 14 foot banquette with cocktail tables, leather chairs and a granite bar, a 7 foot high waterfall gently flows on one wall while a 65 TV screen is on the opposing wall.The beautiful solid wood cherry dining table seats up to 20 and is complimented with high back leather chairs.

All I can say is WOW! Every bite was absolutely amazing. I ordered the Shrimp Cocktail and Pan seared Tuna appetizer (by far the best and I highly recommend) for starters. Ribeye for dinner, which was cooked to perfection and the best steak I've ever had and Cheesecake for dessert. It was the best meal I've had in 20 years. The Tuna is amazing, the steak melts in your mouth and the cheesecake was the perfect end to a beautiful experience. Thank you Bistro 1888. Can't wait for round 2!

On Valentine's 2017 my husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary dinner at this incredible restaurant. The food was wonderful and the service was outstanding - as if we were the only guests there. We tried to repeat that experience on Valentine's 2020. As soon as we walked in the door, we could feel there was something wrong. We stood there waiting to be acknowledged for 10 - 15 min while watching the staff run around like their heads we cut off. We visited Bistro 1888 for the first time tonight but it will definitely NOT be our last visit! Let me start by saying that due to COVID; there weren't many patrons in the restaurant and there was only one server who also worked as the bartender. It did take a while for her to initially serve us but we didn't mind since we were on a date night and definitely not in a rush. Well, everything was well worth the wait!!! Excellent meal with the same good service each time we go. Ate at the bar and Stacey efficiently handled all the drink orders on this busy night as well as serving bar patrons. Lobster and filet combination was one of the specials of the evening. Coupled with crispy shrimp appetizer, and Caesar salad left no room for dessert.

Honest to goodness the worst dining experience in my life!!! Two and a half hours to get our food and it wasn't hot, nor worth the price point. Even in a fast food restaurant I believe we would have gotten an apology from the manager, but not here!! I could go on and on, but if you choose to eat here you might want to consider taking something to snack on and a cushion to rest your weary bum. Please consider me a totally dissatisfied customer!!

We arrived at 7pm for a 7pm reservation, but none of the staff acknowledged us for several minutes. One of our group finally got the attention of a server and we were seated.
Salads were served relatively quickly, but main courses took almost an hour. None were served hot - mine wasn't much warmer than room temperature.
My meal was supposed to include a desert, but it never came.
One of our group asked for napkins, but never received any.
Seems like they had an off night.

While visiting VIR we chose this restaurant (after seeing that it had been touted as "The Best in Virginia". ) (We did make reservations.)

From the beginning, the service was terribly slow but our server seemed to be the only one working and she was working hard.

I chose the tasting menu. Unfortunately, my seafood chowder only included one shred of seafood, with salty broth. At this point, we had waited so long, I was hesitant to say anything. AMAZING!!!
My husband and I went here the first time on our anniversary. We were treated to such amazing treatment, food and atmosphere. We have gone back a number of times since and received the same amazing treatment, service, food and beverages!!! I wish there were more stars to give.

This was an amazing surprise for someone that is willing to go out of their way for good food. My wife and daughter were en route to Lynchburg, Va on a Friday night and wanted something better than chain food. Yelp led us to Bistro 1888 in South Boston, right in the downtown historic district. We each had the three course chefs tasting menu. My entree was the sea scallops, but we all shared every delicious morsel. The service was great, ambiance nice, food way above expectations. Did I mention great wine list and reasonable prices? What a hidden gem.

We loved the tasting menu. The New England seafood chowder was wonderful. The Asian inspired calamari that was tempura fried was great. The tempura scallop were perfect. The cheesecake was so yummy. There were four of us and there wasn't anything but praise. The sauces served with certain dishes were the perfect compliment to the dishes. Yum.

After using the "Yelp" app. I made reservations for 2 for 5:30 PM New year's day Tuesday January 1, 2019. Reservation was confirmed twice by email. We drove an hour to get there only to find that it was closed. Big, big disappointment. We were going there to celebrate our 39th wedding anniversary. Again what a disappointment. Someone needs to check the "YELP" app and update open closed dates.

Not a happy customer, our evening was not memorable.

Full disclosure my mom wrote this lol idk how she logged into my yelp -- This was absolutely awesome! We took our parents here last night and the atmosphere is so nice. The waiter so super. The drinks were great and the salads were fresh and so good and the dinner was outstanding! I had the quail and never had it before. It was SO good. My father had the salmon and he said it was delicious. Everyone else got the crab cake scallop meal and they raved about it. The cheesecake and carrot cake was fabulous. Oh and the fried oyster appetizer was also amazing. Great job Chef!

Great place for a first date! Nice ambiance. Food was amazing! I got the salmon. Perfectly cook. Perfectly seasoned. My date got pork chops. I had a bite of his. It was wonderful. Waitress kept the coffee cups full with freshly brewed coffee. Then the dessert! Carrot cake is hands down my favorite dessert. The cream cheese frosting was smooth and creamy. The vanilla bean ice cream was perfectly creamy. He had chocolate decadent cake that was so oooey and gooey it made my teeth ache looking at it. Delicious doesn't begin to describe it. On the expensive side, but worth the price.

The experience was very nice. The ambiance was peaceful and the personnel were very nice and accommodating. The meals were well prepared and the presentation was picture perfect. The desserts were delectable and satisfying. However, the meal and desserts portions are very small. My wife and I really enjoyed Bistro 1888, but for $28 per plate, the portions could be a larger.

The atmosphere was fairly good. The service - well, they tried really hard. The food was alright. Tasted fine I suppose and for the most part was plated very well. I got the feeling though that they were just giving us small portions in pretty arrangements to justify overpricing. The prices were certainly not based on taste.
I appreciated the variety and creativity of their menu. (though I use the word "creative" very loosely - it was creative for small-town rural Virginia) But, the execution was just lacking.

My wife and I had a wonderful experience here at The Bistro. We celebrated our 46th wedding anniversary here. Very good food, great atmosphere, the service was superb. Victor is top notch, a very good individual and I really enjoyed talking to him. I highly recommend dining here. We will be dining here more often.

Cute restaurant in downtown South Boston, Va. one of the only restaurants open as well. Friendly staff and inviting atmosphere. Visited Bistro 1888 with some work colleagues who were surprised to see some new things on the menu after 8 years which was a little shocking for a first timer. I got the crab cakes, pretty good but I needed more sauce!

Most got the salmon and one colleague said theirs was undercook. Also, I was a bit surprised at how white their rolls were....anyway not much in South Boston and limited selection depending on what time you eat but Bistro 1888 isn't a bad choice

Amazing food. I've had a few issues with some of the staff, but I don't let that affect my perception of the food. The yellowfin tuna and calamari are the best apps, and my favorite entree is probably the pork chop. I have yet to try the lamb, but the crab cakes are delicious! Excellent food! Excellent beer/wine selection! Excellent environment!

My husband and I love this place. The food is DELICIOUS! We usually stop here on our way to Richmond. The steaks are melt in your mouth good. The crab cakes are flakey and full of flavor. It's worth the slightly higher prices.....

Stuffy, old school restaurant in the middle of a small town. I guess this is all you can expect from fine dining here.

I think my opinion of this place was turned off initially because of the reaction I got from the hostess when I walked in. After seating the two people in front of me, she returned to the front podium, glanced at me briefly and walked away to the back. Not exactly the warm welcome I was expecting.

However, the waiter was hard working, humble and polite. He immediately brought me water, asked me what I would like to drink, and asked if I would like some bread. Even though my appetizer

I have driven an hour just to eat here and it was worth it. I'm now a repeat customer. Amazing menu. Salmon with arugula and chevre is out of this world. Excellent drinks. Excellent service. Can't miss with desserts. May need a reservation.

Horrible! It seems that the wheels have completely fallen off here and don't take if from me!

The waitress was very sweet and well meaning, which is the only reasons why we left over $100 cash on the table after she told us that we were not going to be charged for the "whatever "

We should have walked out after the huge pregnant pauses in food /drinks. Then 2 "locals" complained to the staff that they hadn't received their food.

The sole was dry and the greens had so much salt poured on them that they were inedible.

Don't go! I felt sorry for the waitress

I'm not one to go out of my way to leave negative reviews, and I understand that restaurants have a tendency to have "off" nights; however - Bistro 1888 had The worst service I've had in a restaurant in a long time. Upon arriving at the restaurant, it took us almost 10 minutes before the hostess/bartender even acknowledged our presence.

Once we were finally seated, the drinks took 15-20 minutes to arrive at the table, after reminding the waitress twice that we still had not gotten our drinks (to which she copped an attitude that we reminded her). After finally receiving our

I am from NC roxboro area. I took the wife there for her birthday after reading the reviews and it was awesome. I believe better than any restaurant in the Raleigh/ central NC area. Every item on your plate is homemade to perfection nothing halfway about it. I would recommend it anyone. The service is a first class operation the waiter placed a candle and rose on our table to make it a nice atmosphere for the wife. I would Suggest making reservations ahead of time. It's so nice to get a nice server and food unlike the more bigger city's where everyone is rude this place is a true enjoyment

We visit VIR once or twice a year & always try to make a reservation for Bistro 1888.
The food is always wonderful & the service is top-notch. Save room for dessert - you won't be disappointed.
I've never gotten anything that wasn't of exceptional quality there and would highly recommend it to anyone in the area. Even though we stay in Danville, it is always worth the drive to South Boston just to eat at Bistro 1888.

Came here with some co-workers for a nice meal and that is exactly what we got. I ordered the crab cake and scallops and they were quite delicious. The beans seemed pretty basic and although the flavor of the potatoes was good, it could have been warmer as they seemed to be room temp. My co-workers ordered steak and they both they were amazing... with one saying they are going to be quite now and pretty much didn't say a word the entire rest of the meal :). I would highly suggest people come here and try it out.
