A Viennese baker created the very first bagel in honor of King John Sobieski of Poland, because the King reportedly saved Vienna from Turkish invasion in 1683. The traditional water bagel arrived on American shores in the early 20th century, when Jews fled Austria, Germany and Poland.
In 1976, Jay Gershberg and his brother brought NY Bagels to Buffalo and took the market by storm, serving customers at two dozen Bagel Bros locations throughout the region and outside the area. The chain was then purchased by Manhattan Bagel in 2000. Jay created the Bagel Jay's brand in 2001 and partnered with Tom O'Hara, area manager of the original chain, to bring Bagels back to Marshall's and Dash's Plaza.

The food is good, prices are bit high for a low income city looking for a quick bit to eat. Staff is a bit obnoxious if you sit inside. The āanything elseā phrases 9 times when you order is annoying and pushy. Communicate with the customers inside better. Each customer is worth a certain level of capital. Returning customers have a high capital imprint on the company.

Great food BUT the drive thru service person is rude.. she seemed annoyed at my order of three sandwiches, bakers dozen and coffee. Was told to come into store to order next time and when I asked why I was ignored. At window when I implied again the gentleman wasnāt sure why the girl on intercom would say that and apologized. If thereās some āruleā to order from drive through then it should be stated, I will not return to establishment where they seem ābotheredā to take or make my order. Pity because My family and I love their bagels.

I have been a consistent patron of Bagel Jays, and specifically this location for many years. It became kind of like a cozy blanket for me when I was pregnant with my first child and then after he arrived. During that time, I lived around the corner, and would drive past it on my way to work. I can't tell you the number of times I would go through the drive thru to get myself a pastry heart before heading to the office. I'm telling y'all... these pastry hearts are appropriately shaped because they filled up my belly and my soul.

I wish I could give them a 4.5 because there bagels are absolutely delicious but the service is slow. The drive through normally takes longer than I have for a quick bite during lunch. But, I'd highly recommend if you have some extra time grab a bagel or a dozen. I also really enjoy that they have chicken sausage for their sausage, egg and cheeses!

I went through the drive thru. I paid with card and got my food/drink. Then the cashier I believe his name is "Alen H" handed my recipe back I almost drove off then realized I didn't receive my card. So I stopped and waited at the window for him to come back. I then showed him the receipt and said I only got the receipt not my card. He said "yes I handed it to you but you had a weak gripe so you must of dropped it". Odd thing to say. But we looked on the ground I was looking around my car nothing. And I knew I didn't get my card back. He then tells me to pull over

I understand this place is WAS a staple of Buffalo, and I used to go here all the time. The food is so mediocre now. The quality and quantity of even my bacon egg and cheese has drastically reduced. I was in the drive-thru line for about 30 minutes, no exaggeration, for just one sandwich. Not to mention paying $5 for a breakfast sandwich! Never again will I eat here. going to spot coffee or tim hortons from now on.

Based on the other reviews, I don't know if this is an issue exclusively with the drive-thru, but my order was both incorrect and poorly done. My wife ordered a regular cappuccino and the server repeated the order back, but received a french vanilla cappuccino. I ordered a bagel toasted with butter - it was not toasted but was overloaded with butter. Both had to be thrown out unfortunately. I always seek out locally-owned restaurants, but unfortunately consistency can sometimes be a problem, as is the case here. Very disappointed with my experience and will not be returning.

Went through the drive thru this morning, and when I got home, two of my items were wrong. I called and spoke with the manager, Nick. Nick asked for my address, so he could send the right items over. I was thinking, "oh cool! He is going to Grub Hub them, or something to that affect, and I don't have to go back out." 15 mins later, Nick himself shows up with the fixed items. Now that is amazing customer service! There is no way I would ever have expected the manager to leave to drive two bagels 4 miles away, just to make sure his customers were happy. Nick, you are awesome

Had a very nice breakfast with my family. Plain bagel, onion bagel with garlic and herb cream cheese, and asiago bagel with jalapeno cream cheese. All so delicious and warm. Bella the blue haired girl was so pleasant and knowledgeable. A great employee at this fast paced bagel shop. Fresh bagels and homemade cream cheese. Yummm

The treatment from the woman taking the orders and cashing at the window today was appalling. I went through the drive-thru and she came on the speaker abruptly with "What do you want to order?" Very nice greeting. Anyways, I ordered egg salad on a sesame bagel. Pretty straight forward. I am then directed to pull up to the window. The woman that took my order comes over after a few minutes and ignores my "Hi, how are you?" and responds "$14.xx" with her hand out. As I was handing her my card, I realize that my egg salad bagel couldn't possibly cost $14+ and I

Not the best experience. I went through the extremely narrow drive thru, terrified I would scrape my car the whole time. Then I ordered a bagel with cream cheese. I had to repeat the order 3 times. It took a long time. And the bagel was an everything bagel but it was really, really salty for some reason; and there was soooo much cream cheese I threw out a lot of it. Also, not to be nitpicky but unlike the thin drive thru, the hole in the bagel was unacceptably huge (similar in diameter to a soda can) and stuffed with a huge pile of cream cheese. It got messy. Just NO.

This was my first visit to bagel jays. I went in the drive thru and I could barely see the menu because the car was right up against the wall basically and I felt rushed while I was ordering. I got an everything bagel with olive and pimento smear. The bagel was not toasted or warmed at all like I was expecting nor was I asked if I wanted it that way. The smear had maybe 2 pieces of olives.

People working at Bagel Jays on New Day were nothing but extremely rude! We used the drive through service man on microphone was rude, yelled pull up after order placed. Then a dark hair women comes to the window. At 158 pm and said we are out of onion bagels for your pizza bagel and we close in minutes. There are 5 cars waiting in line behind us, worker with dark hair throws up her arms when I said sesame would be fine over them being out of onion bagels. She throws up her arms with a rude tone and said "ok well it takes five minutes to make, and we close at 2pm. It's 158, and many

You know that episode of Seinfeld? Where there's a crazy-good soup place but Jerry and the gang are afraid to go because the owner runs his kitchen and customers like an army?
That's sort of what this Bagel Jay's location is like!
Jokes aside, I really do love their bagels, spreads, and sandwiches. So much. If carbs weren't a thing to be concerned about, I'd gladly eat a Bagel Jay's bagel on a daily basis.
My boss recently got the office an assortment of bagels that lasted us a few days. The cinnamon raisin was delicious. I mostly only eat their savory bagels or

OK this one's on me, l'll admit it. I should have known a bagel outside of the NYC/NJ area wouldn't be my cup of tea. We placed the order over the phone and made plans to come pick it up in 5-10 min. Ya know pretty typical covid procedure..We came to pick it up the people were busy, yet still nice. We got the the car and opened the bag to reveal some of the tiniest bagels we've ever seen lol. It must've been the size of my fist, which is not very impressive. The flavor was fine, but we were definitely still hungry. Thanks for the memories though!

They do a good job, but sadly, it's the only bagel franchise [that I'm aware of] in Western New York.
No competition, makes for an average bagel.
Their price points are fine, but you can count the poppyseeds, on the poppyseed bagel, and the sesame seeds on the sesame seed bagel! Not like New York or Toronto, where you can barely see what's underneath the seeds.
I'm not sure if they even make their own dough.
It's good, but not great, and I'm a frequent visitor to 2 of their stores. [My kids love their plain bagels].

Why did it it take me so long to find this place?! YUM! I've drove by for a while and always see the line... but today I decided to pop over and see what commotion is about... I am so happy I did!!!
Seeing how it was late morning... I decided to get tuna salad on a salt bagel. Such an excellent decision! I can't wait to go back and try something different!!

I was driving around Buffalo and decided to stop in to Bagel Jays and order food through the drive thru. I ordered 3 sandwiches and one bagel with cream cheese. The woman that opened the drive thru window to hand us our food held the bag out and said "Next time order online, you ordered a lot of food and we are really busy right now." and then shut the door and walked away without saying anything else.

I'm going to have to agree with all the rest of the mediocre reviews. I've heard great things about Bagel Jay's and was near the Delaware location today so I thought I'd give it a shot. There are a lot of options, but I went with a standard turkey sandwich bagel for my first time.
It was OK. If I was starving and nothing else was available this would be perfectly adequate. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here, though. The price was reasonable (under $7) for the sandwich and the bagel was fresh. Was it the best bagel I've ever had? No way.
The service was friendly

Who doesn't love a good bagel?! Bagel Jay's is the best local shop specializing in bagels. They have an awesome variety of flavors. You can get your typical kinds- plain, everything, sesame, blueberry. But then they go a step beyond and give you chocolate chip, salt, jalapeƱo cheddar, and my personal favorite- CRANBERRY ORANGE!!
Apart from just your regular bagel and schmear, they do breakfast sandwiches, lunch style sandwiches (turkey, ham, salad style, etc) and so much more with their bagels.

In my opinion they have the best Bagels in Buffalo. They are always fresh and delicious on their own or in any sandwich options available. I love sesame bagels so I usually get those with veggie cream cheese. They have a variety of delicious smears and hummus if you like that on your sandwich. Ive also had their egg salad and its quite good. The staff is friendly but somewhat aloof. Sometime you maygm get plenty of smear, other times not enough. I just tell them to give me extra smear.
