It was formed in 1928 as a resort town designed by the founder Ole Hanson. He envisioned a Spanish style resort town close to the major cities and named the city after the San Clemente Island off the coast of California.
The Spanish style still permeates throughout the city with building codes requiring new buildings to conform to Spanish architecture. The great climate that brought people to San Clemente is still one of the greatest attractions with an average temperature not exceeding 79°F each month and not dropping below 64°F.

Ole Hanson founded San Clemente in 1925. With the financial help of a syndicate headed by Hamilton Cotton, Ole Hanson purchased and planned a 2,000 acre community that would embody a Spanish Colonial style with white stucco buildings topped by red tile roofs. He named San Clemente after San Clemente Island - the southernmost of the Channel Islands.
