Services
Smalley's Animal Hospital is one of the oldest veterinary practices in our area. Dr. James L. Smalley began practicing veterinary medicine from a small office in downtown Dublin, above what is now Carrol's Boot Store. In those days, veterinary practice was almost all limited to large-animal calls on farms.
At Smalley's Animal Hospital, we emphasize a wellness strategy for puppies and kittens that monitors their early growth and development as well as ensures they are adequately vaccinated against many common infectious diseases. After your new pet is off to a great start, our wellness programs help them to maintain a longer, healthier life.
Through a thorough history and physical examination, we will determine the underlying cause of your pet's symptoms. Most internal medicine cases require the performance of diagnostic tests to help us to determine your pet's health problems. At Smalley's Animal Hospital, We provide a wide range of in-house diagnostics, including routine blood work (CBC and Chemistry Profile), urinalysis, digital radiology, and ultrasonography.
If your animal is not behaving as he usually does or is showing signs of injury or illness, it is important to find the source of the problem as quickly as possible, so you can make decisions about treatment. At Smalley's Animal Hospital, we perform comprehensive in-house blood work, which consists of complete blood count (CBC) and blood chemistry profile, which enables us to provide you with rapid and accurate laboratory tests while you wait.
At Smalley's Animal Hospital, we perform elective surgeries (spays, neuters, mass removals, dental procedures) five days a week by appointment and on as needed for critical or emergent patients.
We have a dedicated surgical suite that consists of a heated surgical table, state-of-the-art anesthesia monitoring equipment (heart rate, oxygen saturation, CO2, ECG, NIBP, body temp), inhalant anesthesia vaporizer, and oxygen monitored by a trained veterinary technician as well as the doctor. Each surgery is performed under aseptic conditions with a sterile surgical pack.

We were told to drop our dogs off in the morning even though they weren't seen until late afternoon. It's stressful enough on pets going to the vet but even more so when they have to listen to other animals all day being seen and in distress. We would have liked to been there, even if just in the waiting room.

We would like to say THANK YOU to the entire staff. Your office has never waivered from “Mending God’s Creatures.” We were always met with a smiling face and a warm heart. Whether it was Dr. Jim telling me a story about his Aunt’s boxer that had a charge account for ice cream, Dr. Michelle Hightower calling me after hours to check on Duke, or Dr Peggy’s care and compassion on Duke’s final day. Duke truly loved going to the vet. Every time we would grab his leash, he would get excited and sprint to the door. We appreciate everything that you do for all of your patients. Thank You!

Recently we carried 3 of our pet dogs for their current rabies shot. I had carried one of them about a year ago for a wellness exam. Then and now we got excellent service and on a timely matter. Dr. Jim Hobby and staff showed much care and concern for our pets. He also thoroughly answered our questions. We will be making an appointment soon for all three for their current wellness exam. Prices were reasonable also!

Was just talking to several friends who were complaining about how smalley's won't approve any online meds for their babies and I remembered that I had the same problem when I lived in Ga. An FYI: smalley's is required by law to issue a written script that you can fill elsewhere so if you're trying keep trying. Not only did they reject the online… orders for my babies' meds smalley's charged, and they still charge, 50% to 75% more for meds than trusted online pharmacies. Meds were and still are their "profit center" I guess. In this economy and with covid-19 and job loss it's not compassionate

Last week we had to evacuate from coastal SC due to hurricane Dorian. We were headed to the Atlanta area with our dog Leroy but Leroy was so anxious we had to stop about 10-12 times turning a 4.5 hour trip into a 8 hour ordeal.
Our last stop was outside of Dublin so I had the idea of boarding Leroy locally and picking him up on the return. Found Smalley's online.
The people couldn't have been nicer after I explained the evacuation and Leroy's behavior. If I lived in the Dublin area, this definitely would be our veterinarian. No questions.
Leroy hates to be boarded but he walked

After rescuing two little puppies in an area which I didn't live, finding a great vet was easier than I thought. I spoke with a local pet store where they recommended and I went Smalley's. I've only had my puppies see Dr. Ritchie but he is FANTASTIC!! One of the best veterinarians I've ever brought my animals to. Dr. Ritchie really cares about your animals, spends time with you and will answer all your questions. He's available after hours if you have an emergency and he remembers all of his little patients. Take your pet to Dr. Ritchie if you want a great vet !
