It's an apt description. Hands on a pencil, sketching out the image of a building that doesn't exist yet. Hands on a chisel, a plane, a clamp. A welding rod. Old school. No 3D printing, no maker-bots. I like to see the fingerprints of the sculptor in the finished piece, the smudges and eraser shavings on a pencil drawing.

What motivated me to become an architect was watching my cabinetmaker father in his study, drawing up the next kitchen he was going to build, then working in the shop and seeing that image turn into a physical reality. I thought it was fascinating to be a part of that process. I just took that experience to the next level: designing whole structures.
Services
HandsOn Design is me. Paul Duncker. I'm an licensed architect in Wyoming, Colorado, and New York. I'm also a fabricator of custom cabinetry, furniture and other architectural componentry. Cabinetry, doors, staircases, fireplace mantles, lofts and the like. I have been a County Planning Commissioner throughout the rewrite of our Comprehensive Plan, and am currently working on our Land Development Regulations.
Residential remodel of a fairly nondescript home in a fabulous location. Main interventions included the insertion of an exposed steel moment frame in the upper level Great Room framing a spectacular view of the Tetons, a reorganization of the front facade with an entry canopy and Master Closet bump-out, and the insertion of a temperature controlled Wine Room in a former crawl space.
A forward thinking oilfield services company that included a wind turbine and photovoltaic lighting in their corporate headquarters. Barn in foreground is ranch Manager's residence. Behind is the Bunkhouse, with (4) bedroom suites and communal kitchen for truck drivers and private pilots. The upper level was built of prefabricated storage trusses with a 2x12 bottom chord acting as floor framing.
The images below represent a line of semi-custom benches designed and fabricated for the Jenny Lake area of Grand Teton National Park. They are also available for purchase. Please contact us at handson@onewest.net for more information. The Jenny Lake benches are designed to provide comfortable and attractive seating options for parks, plazas and pathways, either with or without a backrest.
In addition to serving on the Teton County Planning Commission, architect Paul Duncker and HandsOn Design have participated in community planning charettes, design competitions, and calls for submissions contributing pro-bono design services to these and other investigative endeavors focussed on contextual housing typology development and educational art initiatives.
