While completing her undergraduate education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a course in mass communication and the law inspired Courtenay to study law at the University of Baltimore.She joined the family law association and after interning one summer for the Honorable Judge Ruth A. Jakubowski of the Circuit Court for Baltimore County, Courtenay realized her passion and interest was in practicing family law.
