In the 1980s, Al, Gary, and Kathy Barnum operated a bail bond company on Court Avenue in Des Moines called Barnum Bail Bonds. After closing that business, the father and son duo, Al and Gary, began talking about going into business together again. Gary had been working in carpentry for several years, but both desired the benefits of owning their own business.
At the time, Al was retiring after 35 years as a stockbroker. Although Al was ready to leave the demands of the financial industry, he was not ready to retire. As the story goes, in 1994, Al was sitting at a resort in Costa Rica visiting his youngest daughter, Kelly, who was serving in the Peace Corps.

I have worked with these guys for years - they do an amazing job!! Gary, Kathy and the whole staff are so easy to work with and they stand behind everything that they do. I've always been impressed with their knowledge of products and their attention to detail in lacing in to existing floors and matching existing stains. I highly recommend them.

It was the most professional experience I’ve ever had working with any home remodel company. They refinished my floors and installed a new area of hardwood. The installers even noticed that the first wood delivered wouldn’t be an exact match. From what I could tell the wood looked exactly the same but they made the change and it is insane how much this wood matches the old wood. They made all these changes before even sanding off the old hardwood so it didn’t affect the timeline at all. They communicate so well and give you updates on schedule almost every week. We had an wonderful experience from planning to installation. They kept us informed of the schedule early and along the way. We had our existing hardwood refinished and new hardwood installed in two rooms that were carpet. They did an excellent job blending the floors together. I would highly recommend them for your hardwood flooring project.

Barnum refinished our hardwood flooring upstairs. They were one of the least expensive quotes we got, but definitely seemed one of the most professional and knowledgeable. Floors look great and there was like zero mess left behind. 10/10 We will be using them again for the main level!

Our experience with Barnum Floors was exceptional. This is a family owned business and their dedication to providing great customer service is evident! As part of a kitchen remodel, we were needing to replace some existing areas of wood flooring and add new flooring to an area that previously had carpet. The wood we originally used was discontinued. Barnum installed new unfinished ash flooring and then refinished the entire main floor so that everything matched perfectly. Their office staff were knowledgeable and very patient with us as we asked numerous questions. They kept us informed throughout
