The story of Hertzog Eye Care is the story of an incredible Long Beach family, the Hertzogs, and their legacy and impact they continue to have on the Greater Long Beach area. Dr. Leif Hertzog is a 4th generation Long Beach ophthalmologist who has practiced for 27 years, and together with his son, Dr. Dieter Hertzog, they own and operate Long Beach's leading eye institute.
The Hertzog family legacy goes back to the late 1800s with Dr. Charles Hertzog, MD, who graduated from medical school in 1896 and went into private practice in the South Side of Pittsburgh. An unfortunate illness took his life early in his career but one of his four children followed in his footsteps.
Leif M. Hertzog, M.D. is a fourth-generation physician and eye surgeon. He specializes in the most modern techniques of intraocular lens implantation and cataract surgery Long Beach. His particular emphasis is on PREMIUM intraocular lens implants that help to reduce, and sometimes eliminate, a person's dependency on glasses.
We accept almost all Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plans. With a PPO plan, you can usually see us for an examination without a referral from your primary care physician (PCP). However, since there are so many different insurance plans, you will still need to check your membership book, or call your insurance company to make sure that we are on their provider panel.
Lasik stands for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis. The procedure involves creating a 'flap' on the front of the eye (the cornea), removing or 'ablating' the underlying tissue to reshape it, then laying the flap back down over the area of the cornea that has just been reshaped. A cataract represents a clouding of the natural crystalline lens of the eye.

Dr. H. Hertzog diagnosed me of eye allergy and prescribed me steroids eye drops that were more often more than necessary . My condition did not improve but only got worse and I had extreme pain in my eyes during sleep . It turned out his diagnose was wrong by the two UCLA expert eye physician he referred me to for a second opinion . According to and confirmed by the two UCLA eye physicians I did not even had eye allergy at all . My eyes were so damaged that I have not been able to wear contact lens. We have been going here for a number of years. We moved an hour away but chose to continue seeing them. I have worn contacts for about 35plus yrs but realized my vision was getting worse. Reason--cataracts! I finally decided to have the surgery. It was so incredibly easy and pain free. I am so excited about the decision I picked for my new eye lenses. It is very easy to reach someone by phone which these days seems to be uncommon. The entire experience from making my appointment to actually being evaluated and then treated was very easy and comfortable. Dr. Hertzog explained everything to me and provided his recommendations for my best results. After the cataract surgeries, I am so happy to be able to see clearly again. I highly recommend Dr. Hertzog and his office for the best eye care.

I would give them ZERO Stars if I could.
These guys (father, sons, etc) are in business to make a lot of money and if possible to do minimum effort.
I went to get rid of a prolapsed orbital fat which if you "google" it ... it's an easy small outpatient surgery.
Well, not for Leif Hertzog. He instructed his lady assistant to do the eyes check on the board with letters (probably for all new patients) and I said:
-I don't need glasses, I came here for very different reason
-It is at no extra charge for you, your insurance will pay ! she said.
When Leif Hertzog came in, he agreed

What can I say other than 5 stars all the way. My wife recently had eye surgery and she was not a regular patient. Her eyes were pretty messed up. Hes pretty messed up. They have to do one eye at a time and their Ware complications but not the fault of the surgery because my wife scratched her eye. After the 2nd surgery fast forward 1 month and she is seeing great for the 1st time in her whole life. She has been wearing contacts and glasses her whole entire life and now at 32 she can see. His office is extremely clean, and with Covid protocols is very safe. The staff is above courteous and friendly. I highly recommend Hertzog Eye Care.

The staff at Hertzog were all excellent, and Dr, Hertzog exceeded all of my expectations. He makes himself available for any questions or concerns, completely explains the surgery and addresses any concerns.

Doctor Herzog is an amazing ophthalmologist. He performed cataract surgery on both of my eyes. My end vision is 20/20. I was a bit skeptical at first but Dr Herzog took time to explain what he would do, exact steps of prepare, surgery, and post care and he was supportive and encouraging every step of the way. His supporting staff was equally attentive. Each person made it abundantly clear she was an active part of my “team”. 10+ years ago I found Hertzog Eye Care on Yelp. I needed to see an ophthalmologist close to home and have continuously had my bi-annual eye exam every year. Here you will find the most caring staff of professionals with the greatest customer service you can ever find. Even through Covid they are running their business attentively and what a relief it is. Dr D Hertzog is the best. Very patient and through. He explained everything about my cataract surgery and helped me to relax and not get anxious. The staff at the surgery center also raved about how he was their favorite doctor and how he didnt require as much as others. My vision is 20/20 and I am very happy with not only him but his staff.

I love this place. I was referred to this office by my previous optometrist who had diagnosed me with glaucoma. Dr. Hertzog did his evaluation and cleared my fears. I love how dedicated he is with his patients. The new offices are awesome and the front desk staff might not be hugs and kisses when you walk in, but they are very professional and helpful. I love their selection of glasses and the staff goes out of her way to find something that you will love, that will match your style and that can fit within your budget.

My wife and I would award 10 stars if we could. It starts right at the top. Dr. Hertzog is simply the best. In addition to our regular eye care at his office over the years. recently he surgically removed both of my cataracts (3 weeks apart) and placed restore lenses in each eye. Even when the patient got a little anxiety during the second surgery, Dr. Hertzog was very calming and reassuring and everything went smoothly.
