New Haven, CT roofs take a beating year-round due to cold, wet winters and warm, humid summers. If you're replacing a roof for the first time, there is some basic terminology that can help you understand the choices available to you. Some roofing materials require a larger upfront investment but last a long time with little on-going maintenance or repair.
Finding where a roof is leaking can be easy or very difficult to determine. If there are missing shingles or clear damage to a roof the process is often easy. If the attic is open and the beams and raters can be inspected this also makes leak detection easy. However, if there is no visible damage, once water enters a house it can run along wood support beams for quite a distance before the water appears on the ceiling or wall.
Asphalt shingles are one of the most popular roofing materials used in the New Haven area. Giant Roofing believes this is due to their lower cost coupled with a long life-span. If you're considering an asphalt shingled roof, it's important to understand the choices that you'll need to make. Fiberglass shingles are constructed of woven fiberglass, which are then covered in waterproof asphalt.
New Haven averages approximately 48 inches of rain annually. With four feet of rain coming down on your property, rain gutters need to be a priority. Properly installed gutters are essential to keeping your siding from getting mold and rot, and keeping your basement dry. Rain gutters move water away from the house to protect it.

The south side of the roof was in really bad shape and the roofer told me the north side could have survived another year or two, but I decided to replace the whole roof at one time because it was less expensive in the long run to do the whole job at once. I did not feel pressured at
