In 2009, I started to practice law, but that was not until after a 25-year career in law enforcement. For those 25 years, I worked for the City of Plantation, Florida, Police Department. In addition, for 9 of those years, I was in charge of the "Major Crimes Unit." The major crimes unit investigated all sorts of violent crimes including murder and rape.
My practice is concentrated in criminal defense; all felony crimes from murder, aggravated assault, sex crimes, drug crimes, to misdemeanors, and DUI. But I understand that representation involves many things beyond just going to court with you. It involves counseling clients before they do something that may have legal implications, such as how to comply with Arizona's medical marijuana laws.
First and foremost, violent crimes are not only treated seriously by the prosecution and criminal justice system. Because they also tend to be considered the most serious types of crime by the general public. Therefore, even being accused of a violent crime can lead you to be judged by other people wherever you go.
If you are charged with a felony, you are facing the possibility of being sentenced to prison. Therefore, any felony charge is a very serious matter. Furthermore, even if you only get probation; you will have a felony conviction on your record. In addition, it could impact any future crimes that they may decide to charge you with.
Since drug crimes are sometimes glamorized in movies and on TV, they may nor seem that serious. No doubt, the hit series Breaking Bad and Weeds are great examples of this. In addition, social attitudes toward drug use seem to be growing more accepting. Of course, this means that friends and family may not think drugs are a "big deal."
