Karate itself is a popular martial art developed in Okinawa, Japan (specifically in the Ryuku Islands south of Japan). It literally means "the way of the empty hand" since no weapons were initially used. Modern karate is largely a striking art, utilizing punches, kicks, strikes involving the knees, elbows, and open hand techniques.
Taekwondo was introduced to the United States during the 1950s. A few master instructors traveled to America to introduce this martial art. Throughout the following decades, Taekwondo grew in popularity, not only as a martial art but also as a sport first practiced and performed in the Olympics in 1988.
BJJ or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu first became popular in America in the 1990s with Royce Gracie winning the first UFC and subsequent UFCs. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was initially developed in the 1920s though. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was originally a self-defense martial art. However, Gracie-style BJJ is not the only style taught or practiced.
MMA stands for Mixed Martial Arts. It is a hybrid sport incorporating techniques from many different martial arts. Today most MMA fighters train in boxing, karate. Muay Thai, Judo, jiu jitsu, and wrestling along with other disciplines. Initially, MMA was considered a no-holds-barred form of fighting that has shrugged off the "no rules" concept into one of the world's fastest-growing spectator in the early 2000s.
