Our focus on site specific architecture helps create harmony between the buildings we make and the natural elements within our environment. We explore context and place, the quality of light and space, as well as materials and their qualitative events to produce not only a responsible design, but a journey of the senses.
Framed by its majestic central Oahu site, the Art Center synthesizes contemporary elements to provide a sustainable yet creative space for the arts. Oahu's alluring landscapes [A'ina] inspired the Center's form and character. Its roof lines and slender building envelope echo the angles of the nearby mountains and gulches, and its natural grass rooftop helps transition the building into its site, a former plantation field.
As visitors walk the campus, they will pass through a series of spaces, experiencing a progression from the everyday to the spiritual realm. They will transition from large to small spaces, rough to refinement, noise to quietness, and community to individual solitude. As they near the Sanctuary, having crossed one space and into the next, they become more focused, serene, and engaged.
