Smith Barid
As Savannah estate planning attorneys, we have learned that when you fail to do proper estate planning, those left behind can be devastated. Don't let that happen! A qualified elder law attorney can help you and your family find peace of mind about the staggering costs of long-term care. We help seniors and their families with legal planning for long-term care.

We help you plan for the care of your loved ones with special needs after you're gone through trusts, wills, powers of attorney and guardianships. We help families navigate the process of wrapping things up after the death of a loved one by providing counseling, advice and representation in trust administration or the probate courts.
Services
The typical estate planning consultation begins with an attorney sitting down with a potential client, yellow legal pad in hand. This is what we refer to as the blank slate approach. This approach runs the risk of leaving out critical information that can cause mistakes in the planning.

Rather than beginning with a blank slate, we believe in utilizing a well-developed process that we have honed and refined over our thirty plus years of combined experience to help you make decisions about what type of planning is appropriate for your situation and your family. We further believe that a collaborative approach brings the best results for our clients.
Smith Barid, LLC was founded in 2006 by Michael H. Smith and Richard S. Barid to realize their vision of helping clients plan for the inevitable surprises of life with a different more client centered approach. Richard and Mike have focused on bringing clients innovative approaches to their estate planning issues in a process driven, results oriented environment.
Smith Barid, LLC are Savannah attorneys who help clients with wills and trusts, tax planning, business planning, elder law and special needs planning. We serve clients in Chatham, Effingham, Bryan, Bulloch, Liberty, Long, Evans, Tattnall, Glynn and Camden counties and elsewhere throughout Georgia.

My aunt trusted this law firm to write her will and have it probated once she died. It has been nearly three (3) years since the death of my aunt and the will has not been probated yet. I objected to the will because the lawyers included that if the heirs of my aunt were disqualified to receive their inheritance, then it would go to the descendants of Brigham Young. And in the petition that listed all of the heirs, the heirs of Brigham Young were not listed. I highly suggest that if anyone has had a will written by these lawyers - they need to read through their entire will and ask questions.

Both Mike and Richard maintain the highest standards of professionalism while simultaneously creating a warm, comfortable environment. While it is not pleasant to contemplate your death, estate planning is essential for protecting your legacy on this earth. Mike and Richard make these hard conversations easier by asking the right questions so they understand your goals in developing an estate plan. I would not trust anyone else with my family's future.

Fantastic experience with very knowledgeable attorneys. I used them for a special needs trust for my son. The process was very streamlined. A consultation over the phone for an hour with everything needed for the trust. I only had to come in to sign. Highly recommended.

They helped us work through our questions regarding wills, trusts, power-of-attorney, etc., and got our wills updated and trust created. It feels good to have all of that taken care of.

Mike and Richard at Smith Barid filled a huge gap in the team of professionals we needed to have a successful plan in place for our children and family in the event life takes it toll on us. We feel so much better having a will in place and a thoughtful plan that accomplishes our estate goals and final wishes. Catherine and I feel at ease knowing we have Mike and Richard to go to, as do our children if life gets tough, and you cant put a price on that. I highly recommend everyone plan for the unknown, and have a team of down to earth, knowledgeable attorneys to like Mike and Richard to rely on

They were recommended, so I tried to seek their counsel over the course of several weeks. But the administrative staff, citing "processes and procedures," insisted I would have to complete a 12-page, detailed intake form before even an initial 15 minute conversation with an attorney. It is extraordinary that such extensive, personal financial information should be required at a such a stage in a possible relationship, especially considering how vulnerable everyone is these days to abuse, including the elderly in Savannah. Pass.

One year ago (October 2014), I contacted Smith Barid, LLC to schedule an appointment to discuss a special needs trust for my soon-to-be 18-year-old son who has severe cerebral palsy. Richard Barid guided my husband and me through the lengthy and complicated process of establishing supplemental needs trusts and guardianship/conservatorship of an… incapacitated adult. Richard accompanied us to Probate Court and prepared a separate family living trust wherein our assets were retitled for ease in administering our estate(s) in the years to come. Richard updated our 15-year-old wills, powers

I have worked with many law firms over many years on many different issues. Mike Smith and Richard Barid are exceptional in their attention to detail and effectiveness, but what really sets their services apart from many other law firms is the personal attention that they give to each and every client.
