Services
The decision to begin therapy is an important one. The first session is an opportunity to share more about your personal history and current situation and gather information about your therapist's qualifications and practice orientation. Information regarding the benefits or alternatives to therapy will be discussed along with what to expect in terms of time, commitment and cost.
Individual psychotherapy involves regularly scheduled visits between a client and therapist. The sessions may focus on current or past problems, experiences, thoughts, feelings, or relationships. By sharing with a trained, empathic therapist, clients may come to understand more about themselves and their problems.
Family therapy assists whole families to improve the way they talk and listen to one another and to resolve differences. It's goal is to enhance the individual growth of family members, while it promotes a deep sense of belonging. It can help two or even three generations examine the beliefs, the deep feelings, and the ways they are relating that hurt the comfort and health of the whole system.
Family therapy supervision and consultation is offered at the Center for Family Therapy by Kathy Smith-Brown. She is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, trained at Northeastern University and The Kantor Family Institute. In the nineties she, with 2 colleagues, founded the Kantor Family Institute on the Cape, which trained a number of marriage and family therapists.
Cognitive-behavioral methods have been shown in controlled studies to provide effective treatment for numerous clinical problems. CBT has been shown to be as effective as drug treatment for depression and anxiety disorders. The cognitive-behavioral therapist works with their client to set goals for therapy and to monitor progress periodically to assess whether the goals are being met.
