For many years Colorado was lucky to be almost rabies free. The only wildlife carriers were bats and there is not often contact between bats and domestic animals. That is no longer the case. Rabies cases in domestic animals have now turned up all over the state. Usually, it is after contact with a rabid skunk.
Rabies is a zoonotic disease. It can kill the animal that is infected including humans. The first two vaccinations are give one year apart. After that three year intervals are sufficient for dogs and cats with the proper vaccines. Don't be caught with skunk contact and an unvaccinated animal. It could result in euthanasia of your pet.

Dr. Hecht believes that the quality of life for pets and their owners is greatly improved when the pets are surgically sterilized. Female cats will be in estrus (heat) continuously until they are bred if they are not spayed. They usually will produce two litters of about five kittens a year starting at six months of age.
Unless you are in the breeding business, you and your pet will most likely have a longer, healthier and happier time together, after your pet is neutered. Undesirable behavior as well as certain diseases can be eliminated by neutering your pet. Spay and neuter has the least risk and quickest recovery time when it is done on a young animal.
Dr. Margaret Hecht offers acupuncture for pets including dogs, cats, horses, llamas, alpacas and any other pet that the owner thinks would benefit from acupuncture. Acupuncture can be a powerful adjunct and/or alternative to traditional western medicine. Many owners have experienced acupuncture themselves and are aware of the benefits.
