Jim began his career in landscaping at a local nursery. He took great interest in landscape design and soon began doing work outside of his nursery job during his free time. As his natural talent for design grew, so did his desire to own his own business. In 1982 Jim purchased his first truck and began J. Downend Landscaping.
Unlike many others in this industry, he picked up a shovel instead of choosing to push a lawnmower. Jim spent the first five years in business installing landscapes until he brought his brother Joe on to begin his maintenance division. Downend Landscaping, Inc. began as a small, neighborhood landscape firm in Delaware County. From our humble beginnings, we matched the ever-growing nature of the Philadelphia metropolitan area in order to meet the increased demand of our customers.
The safety of our employees is our number one priority. However, unlike businesses with a fixed work location, our employees are out in the field where we cannot completely remove potentially hazardous conditions. To combat this, all of our employees are trained to safely use our equipment, identify onsite hazards, take precautionary steps to minimize those hazards, and provide first-aid in the event that an injury occurs.

We target our full range of maintenance capabilities to meet those specific needs and execute relentlessly day in and day out to make it happen. For over 40 years, our qualified team of snow and ice management professionals has been dedicated to keeping roads, walkways, and parking lots free from ice and snow throughout Southeastern Pennsylvania. Our mission is to provide safe environments for both commercial and private clients throughout the winter months.

My wife, Amanda, and I were referred by our builder, Ross Hellings of Hellings Builders Inc., to J. Downend Landscaping and we are grateful for the referral. Dave Turberville, was our design and project manager. Dave was great, he knew we were moving from California to PA and that coordinating such a project would take extra time and effort on his… part. He did not let us down. He was engaging and responsive to our desires for a certain design and the look that we wanted for our new home. The design he presented was second to none and included many garden and shrub beds, 30,000 square feet

We had hired J Downend to take our backyard from a weed infested wilderness to a space my family would enjoy. J Downend rose to the challenge, our yard has a steep grade and was difficult to maintain because of… water run off. They built the most amazing patio and fire pit that looks like it has always been there! They listened to us and designed a space that fits our life’s perfectly, from the low maintenance plants that were chosen to the hard scape stones that reflect the surrounding area.
