Mainbuilt began in 1957 with company founder, William R. Main. Originally named WR Main Contractors, William "Bill" started building homes and providing construction services as personal projects for friends and family. It wasn't long before word of mouth spread which led to creating a trusted, well-respected, custom home building firm that continues to serve the Greater Des Moines Area.
Bill wasn't just the owner but a hands on worker. As the company grew, he was able to expand from completing one project at a time, to 3-4 large projects simultaneously, while still maintaining his high level of quality control. As the years went by, WR Main Contractors grew to become Mainbuilt, a second generation "boutique" custom home construction company.

Our team is made up of a diverse set of skilled tradespeople, many that are part of our staff and others from businesses that we work very closely with, and consider to be in the Mainbuilt "family". This includes home designers, interior designers, kitchen and bath designers, building contractors, staff laborers, and architects.

Mainbuilt is honored to be recognized by General Contractor Magazine as one of the nation's top vacation home builders. Dwell magazine, a leading residential design and construction magazine has featured one of our most unique builds, the Ravine Residence. This sustainably built Midwest retreat in rural Iowa was featured in the 2010 Design Awards in Iowa Architect Magazine.
