Hotel Prairie
I invite you to come stay at Hotel Prairie located on the main street in downtown Prairie City in the heart of Eastern Oregon. This historic hotel provides accommodations and common spaces with a unique blend of the charm from the past and the comfort of the present. Hotel Prairie was built in 1910 to serve the travelers, ranchers, and early railroad business clientele traveling to and from the area.

Intervening years were not always kind as the building's use morphed from hotel to boarding house and then from an indoor garage sale to doctor's offices. Four of us, both relatives and friends, purchased the building in 2005 with the idea of bringing the building back to its original glory: a comfortable, cozy hotel to not only serve the needs of the traveling public but worthy of being a destination base in and of itself.
Services
This beautiful brick building was built in 1910 as a hotel to serve the travelers, ranchers, and early railroad business clientele. After a few decades, the building was not used as a hotel but rather as a number of other businesses. This followed a huge learning curve of complete reconstruction details.
Hotel Prairie prescribes to the American Hotel and Lodging Association (AHLA) "Safe Stay" guidelines and Oregon Restaurant and Lodging Association's Best Practices. Our actions include: enhanced cleaning and sanitizing; use of superior cleaning products based on the CDC; and practicing social distancing.
Hotel Prairie is the place to stay while enjoying the recreational opportunities of Grant County and surrounding areas. Situated about mid-way on the Oregon Scenic Byway 'Journey through time', Prairie City offers many scenic and recreational opportunities.

Nearby you can explore the John Day River and Valley, Malheur National Forest and the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness with lakes and waterfalls, the DeWitt Museum at Depot Park, the Kam Wah Chung Museum, and the John Day Fossil Beds and Thomas Condon Interpretive Center should not be missed.

The bed and bedding were sooo comfortable that I didn’t even use my packed home pillows. My girls fell asleep in an instant and Riley was so warm and inviting when we check in late, tired and ready to relax after a long drive. The lobby and hotel is so historically beautiful and maintained. We loved it the moment we walked in. Thanks Hotel Prairie! We will def stay again!

My wife and I chose this place for our anniversary. It is the most impressive place we've ever stayed. Take that for what it is worth -- but we will have special memories of this place for a lifetime. Room 8, the suite, is large, fully furnished, well-supplied and incredibly comfortable with beautiful views ...and a damn good deal!!! Amazing old-west, gold rush feel to this place. If you want to step back in time without sacrificing today's creature comforts then this is the place to stay. Thank you, Donna, and to your wonderful staff, for making this such a special anniversary vacation for us

We stayed at this historic hotel, and felt everything was the best best best! We met Donna, the owner, and found out more of the historic background of this amazing place. Thank you for preserving this hotel for those of us who come through your town. It was such a special place to stay and visit. We were grateful Joyce and Terry Ritner recommended this to us. Wonderful!!!!

Adorable historic hotel in a quintessential small country town. The beds were comfy and the room was sparkly clean. Because it is such an old building, noise can travel between rooms and from the outside very easily, but it was very quiet. I had to do an after hours check in and the staff were very helpful with it. The check out process was very easy as well. I would definitely stay here again!

This place is fantastic! Even better than expected. The staff is so kind. The room is comfortable, clean, and cool in this 95F degree weather. The kitchen area and back garden is so great. I appreciated being able to keep a few things in the refrigerator and being able to use their dishes, toaster, tea kettle, etc... The building is gorgeous and I love learning about the history of the building and the town. And the hotel is dog friendly! 100% would come back here.

When I saw what they charged me for my single room I was embarrassed for them. A hotel with no complimentary breakfast, a TV the size of a shoebox with only 15 channels, no staff on site 24-hours, and a communal kitchen that has bad coffee. $115. It's no secret why they don't advertise their price online and encourage you to call. Might be the only option in town and they'll sure take advantage of you for that.

This hotel is absolutely a gem! We have stayed here a few times on our cycling trips, and the experience has kept us coming back and even extending our stays. It is just that comfortable! The staff are helpful and friendly. The facility is beautifully restored with lovely details. We enjoy bringing our own food on trips, and their communal kitchen is well-equipped and perfect for heating meals. The front lobby is a cozy, inviting place for lounging.
Important for us, is the hotel’s designation as « Bike Friendly » by Travel Oregon. We find it easy to do some minor bike maintenance and cleaning

We had been driving all day and really needed a place to stay. Pulled up saw a lit Vacancy sign and some lights on.
Went to the door and it was locked.
Then we noticed to notice on the window to call for service. They had a box that you could open to make the call, but I had my cell phone so I used it. Within a few minutes someone was there to check us in. Beautiful 1905 ambiance!

The staff were so friendly and very responsive. We didn't have a reservation or anything, we just saw the sign as we were driving through, but the person met us at the hotel and checked us in very quickly. I didn't know what to expect of the hotel itself, but I was very impressed. Everything was clean, and kept up. The shared kitchen area is inviting and the sitting room was very well done. Thank you, Hotel Prairie!

I first found this hotel as a part of the "destination charging" program for Tesla owners, a place to charge your car while you're staying there.

The hotel is in a nice historic building but it's very well maintained and clean. I especially liked that (unlike in many other historic hotels) ventilation and heating systems are well designed and quiet.

So far I've returned to this hotel 3 times. It's a really nice location that gives easy access to surrounding area that have many, many nice secluded hiking trails.

We absolutely adored the Hotel Prairie. Quiet, well-arranged, friendly and thoughtfully done. The whole town was closed down when we came through so we ended up using the kitchen at the hotel which was clean and well-equipped. We enjoyed a lovely meal on their beautiful back porch with great wine from the hotel bar. Being able to bring the kid and the dog to such a lovely and peaceful place was a big plus.

We look forward to coming back and spending more time here.

What a fun, curious, friendly hotel! Great suite! Fun, casual dinner; one entree served each night and 2 salad choices, served on disposable plates. The lobby's complimentary, iced strawberry water was a hit with all ages of our group. Our kids had to flip a coin to see who would get to sleep in the single bed "nook" and who would take the fold out chair - single bed. In our suite, we had a FULL kitchen and the bathroom had TWO sinks and a great shower head. Two comfy couches and a comfy chair/bed in the living/kitchen area made it easy to hang out and/or crash. Rode in late last night on the bike...after our third close call with deer, we decided to call it a night.
Gloria helped us feel right at home. The atmosphere was rustic, peaceful, and charming.
There was no fuss, no deposit, not a bunch of paperwork...such a refreshing change from the standard chains. Thanks so much Prairie Hotel, we will be back.

This is great old hotel with nice rooms. As expected in an old place, the walls are a little thin but nothing obnoxious. The wine bar in the lobby is a great place to hang out. Gloria, who was behind the bar, was exceptional. We stayed here while riding the Old West Scenic Bikeway and the hotel is very bike friendly. Would definitely stay again!

Fabulous hotel. Well located and nicely decorated. Extremely comfortable beds. Also love that they have washable duvet covers. Everything seemed very clean. Friendly staff and good coffee in the morning. Overall lots of charm and was actually cheaper than the chain hotels in John Day. We highly recommend a stay here if you are passing through the Painted Hills.

I can't believe I haven't taken the time to write a review for Hotel Prairie. This is a fantastic place to stay, and well taken care of. I've stayed there twice now, and am dreaming of when I can get back for another visit.

The lobby is a place you want to linger, and they make it easy to do. Decorated with historic photos of the area, it has good seating to curl up with a book and watch the sun set.

We got the same room both times as we liked it so much. Such good memories of reading on the couch, getting up in the morning and getting coffee at the restaurant next to the

Great place to spend a night or two and relax in peace. Hotel restoration is done with class and an eye towards the locale. Cowhide, photos and pictures. From the front sitting area out front I can gaze across the street to the nursing home that is my birthplace...it was the area hospital in the '40's! I have even seen a deer or two glazing on the lawn. Last visit two years ago was good but this past week was even better with air conditioning. Great restaurants a few doors down. Spend a night, want to stay a week. I rarely give five-stars.

A Hidden Treasure in Eastern Oregon......

A stay at the Hotel Prairie is like stepping back in time to the rural old west, but with the comforts of a modern hotel. Historical pictures line the walls.
This beautifully restored historic hotel has very comfy beds. Their rooms nicely appointed and simple decor made for a cozy stay. After a full days drive I thoroughly enjoyed the long hot shower!

There's also a lovely lobby/living room with plush leather sofas and a fireplace.

The hotel has a small kitchen with a fridge and microwave which is a great asset for travelers.

We went to this hotel on January 02, 2013 and stayed the night. The manager met us after hours because we got in late, which was just awesome of her.
The place was immaculate, with a very "homey" feel to it. We had our choice of rooms because we were to be the only guests that night. After we checked in, we had the place to ourselves and I, while not normally comfortable in hotels, was very comfortable. The bed was very nice and I slept like a log after a long trip.
I took my dog with me as well, and he was welcomed by the manager and her son.

All in all, if I get back up this way

As previously reviewed, this place is immaculate, no doubt.

I ended up here because John Day was super crowded with Forest Service personnel undertaking a training event...consider this if you are headed into the area as a tourist without lodging reservations. Anyhow, I could not have been more pleased when a motel clerk in John Day sent me here. Prairie is much more my kind of place. Here it is quiet and charming and just a few miles from the hustle and bustle of Grant County over in John Day. I explored Fossil Beds and the Strawberry Mountains in my short stay.

Back to the place. I got

This place is as good as it gets in small town hotels. It is immaculately furnished. It is white glove clean. It is obviously historic but it has all the modern luxuries. My wife and I stayed here with our one year old son. Our room was spacious enough for his portable crib and then some. Prairie City is a tiny town so my expectations were pretty low, but this place blew my preconceptions out of the water.

They have a kitchen down stairs that is clean and very convenient to use. Also make sure to visit the back yard it is a nice place to sit in the evening and relax.
