Get injured workers back to some sort of work as soon as possible - often sidestepping the job suitability determination process for return to work -and. Give injured workers so much grief they will take disability retirement, or simply resign and go away. Let's say, you are disabled with a back injury, suffered when arresting a criminal, requiring a spinal fusion, and your employing agency cannot provide you with a light duty job.
In such a case you may well receive OWCP benefits for 30+ years, your claim could easily cost your employing agency more than $1,000,000.00 over your lifetime. If you don't believe your claim might cost more than a million dollars over your lifetime, you can bet your employing agency does! As I work only with OWCP and OPM claimants, I know your rights and how those systems work.

In general, when you have questions or problems, contact your attorney first - going around your attorney to speak with OWCP, or other people connected to your claim can cause unforeseen problems. Obviously, speaking with your doctor is always your right and not a conversation your attorney needs to be a part of.
Form CA-1 must be filed with your employing agency within 30 days from the date of your injury. A traumatic injury is an injury that occurs during the course of one workday or work shift.
Examples of traumatic injuries include: lifting, tripping, falling; crush injuries, burns, short term chemical exposure occurring in one workday, slipping, a motor vehicle accident, physical assault, sexual assault, even repetitive activity performed in one work day, e.g., engraving metal tags with a vibrating tool, carrying a box of mail or moving a box of files to a new office space.

These events can be what you might consider to be everyday work activities. For example, working an extra two hours everyday for 3 months, plus Saturdays, in order to complete a project, can be a compensable factor. Over the course of that project you become tired, anxious, overwhelmed or depressed because of all the work you are trying to get done.
Many people are confused as to the process for returning to work following an on-the-job injury once their doctor releases them back to work. If there are no work restrictions or limitations, you simply return to your regular work activities. However, the basic outline of an injury event through the employee's return to work with limitations and/or restrictions should look as follows.
Federal employees do not to be totally disabled to receive OPM disability retirement benefits. If you are disabled from performing one or more of the essential elements of your job you may be entitled to benefits. If you receive OPM disability retirement you can earn up to 80% of what your former position currently pays and continue to receive your disability benefits.
