South Shore Counseling & Psychological Services
Since we opened our doors in 1985, South Shore Counseling and Psychological Services has always been focused on developing our patients' sense of emotional well-being, and restoring quality of life to the children, adolescents, adults, and families we work with. Our outstanding clinical staff consist of 30 psychotherapists: psychologists, mental health counselors, and social workers.

We strive to ensure that balance and happiness are restored to the lives of the individuals, children, and families with whom we work. We also interface with school personnel, families, and other medical professionals whenever necessary in order to provide the most comprehensive treatment possible.

Dr. James is the Director of South Shore Counseling, and has worked in our practice for 27 years. He is a Psychologist who received his doctorate from Hofstra University, and has focused his clinical practice on working with children, adolescents, adults and families.

Initially trained in Behavior Management, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Rational Emotive Therapy (RET), Dr. James has, over the years, been trained in numerous other approaches including Family Systems, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Affective-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (ACBT).Dr. James teaches mindfulness across all therapeutic approaches and believes that through self-awareness we can become self-determined.
Occasional anxiety is an expected part of life. You might feel anxious when faced with a problem at work, before taking a test, or before making an important decision. But anxiety disorders involve more than temporary worry or fear. For a person with an anxiety disorder, the anxiety does not go away and can get worse over time.
Suicide is a major public health concern. Over 47,000 people died by suicide in the United States in 2017; it is the 10th leading cause of death overall. Suicide is complicated and tragic, but it is often preventable. Knowing the warning signs for suicide and how to get help can help save lives. Multiple types of psychosocial interventions have been found to help individuals who have attempted suicide (see below).
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, more than a quarter of American adults experience depression, anxiety or another mental disorder in any given year. Others need help coping with a serious illness, losing weight or stopping smoking, for example. Still others struggle to cope with relationship troubles, job loss, the death of a loved one, stress, substance abuse or other issues.
Cognitive behavioral therapy aims to solve problems concerning dysfunctional emotions, behaviors and cognitions through a goal oriented systematic approach. Because of the interrelationship between thoughts, feelings and behaviors, cognitive behavioral therapeutic interventions involve treating not only thoughts and feelings, but also behavior.

Thank you to South Shore Counseling for helping me through a hard time in my life. I needed a therapist from being isolated and upset over the Pandemic. I was assigned to an amazing therapist, who helped get me through other problems as well. We started as teletherapy and I just started going in the office as they are just reopening for face to face therapy. They are following all guidelines and I felt very safe. I highly recommend this practice.
