I tell people all the time - "Shop for lawyers like you do doctors - find one who specializes in your needs." With that said, I have, perhaps, the most restricted, narrowly defined law practice in all of rural Arkansas. I don't do anything but Estate Planning. Most attorneys, on the other hand, are general practictioners, taking whatever type of matter comes to their door.
They are often referred to as "door" attorneys. They are not focused on just one practice area. They are 'spread thin' trying to become experts in all areas of the law, often becoming bogged down by busy court dockets and disagreeable opposing counsel who are constantly trying to 'derail the train'.

On the other hand, most attorneys, especially those in smaller towns, have a general law practice, taking most everything that comes to their door.
