Change all incandescent and halogen light sources to LEDs. Local Retailers are a great source for these indoor or outdoor lamps and fixtures. Most LEDs will fit into existing lamp sockets. This will result in double savings - fewer watts used to light a space AND less A/C used to cool down the air around those little heat lamps!
If you are already served by a power company, it is considerably cheaper to purchase a "grid-tie" system. If you want to be totally independent of your energy company and/or you need electricity in a location that is not yet served by your energy company and it would be very expensive to connect, you will want to consider a "Battery Stand-Alone" system.
Realistically, you will probably look to supplement your power needs via solar ("grid-tie" as previously described) rather than use a Battery Stand-Alone system. If you want more information about battery back up and true system sizing, please let us know - we have an overview you can use to determine your full power needs.
Step #4: Information to keep in mind when considering a solar system to increase your return on investment. The most productive system is located on a South- or West-facing roof (or area) that is shade-free from 9 am - 3 pm every day of the year. You do not need to size a system to meet all your energy needs.
To properly size a system, we will evaluate the number of watt/hours your home or office uses. This is typically done by looking at past electric utility bills. In cases where this information is not available i.e. Are there any limitations that I should be aware of? With enough solar panels and/or wind generators you can produce as much power as you need.

Texas Solar replaced our inverter (thankfully still under warranty!) and pulled our panels down and put them back up when we replaced our roof. The installers were friendly, communicative and knowledgeable. Our reroof job was complicated and prolonged and everyone was exceptionally patient. All in all they performed good work at a good price and met our needs exactly. Thanks!!

Texas Solar Power Company just installed a 4.35 kW rooftop solar array on our house. The setup is designed to cover all of the electricity we use. The payoff period is 7 years for us - in the end, the rooftop array cost us what electricity would for 7 years, then it's free forever. And that's if electricity costs never go up, which they probably will. So counting the likelihood of electricity rate increases, the payoff period is likely less than 7 years.
Point is, installing a home solar power array is not only good for not burning coal - where the majority of electricity comes from
