Thank you for visiting the Small Forest Karate and Kobudo Dojo (School) in Poquoson, Virginia. Kyoshi Thomas Harris, the school director and head instructor, invites you to join us in the study of the ancient martial arts of Okinawa. We are a traditional Karate school of the Okinawa Shorinryu Kensankai Karate-Do and Kobudo Association which is directed by Sensei Harris's teacher, Hanshi Judan Doug Perry Kudan (10th degree black belt).
The Kensankai has its core roots in Shorin ryu Shorinkan Karate-do. Hanshi Perry's teacher, Shugoro Nakazato, Hanshi Judan is the founder of the Okinwan Shorin ryu Shorinkan in Okinawa. The practice of karate originated in Okinawa and spread to the rest of the world due to the dedication of the great masters of the different karate systems on the island.

Kyoshi Thomas Harris is a seventh degree black belt. He started his Karate training in the Okinawan Shorin-ryu Shorinkan karate-do system headed by Hanshi (grand master) Shugoro Nakazato. Shorin-ryu karate is one of the origional forms of traditional karate. Ten years ago, after 40 years of training and teaching, Sensei Harris opened the Small Forest Karate & Kobudo Dojo in Poquoson, Va.
Kobudo is a separate martial art yet most every traditional Karate Dojo teaches weapons. Kobudo training is important for many reasons. Teaching Kobudo preserves an ancient Okinawan fighting art and deepens the students understanding of this art and its relationship to Karate. Kobudo enhances the practitioner's karate technique.
Our classes always start and end with quiet meditation to clear and focus the mind and relax the body. Physical fitness development is the first part of the class to help the body strengthen itself and stay healthy.
After the warm-up, stretching allows the student to maintain and extend their flexibility and keep the body loose so the chance of pulling a muscle is greatly reduced and it helps to allow the ability to accomplish techniques that require flexability.Once the warm-up time is completed, the students will begin their Karate training.

We would like to welcome all of our students to the Small Forest Karate Dojo. It is exciting to have so many interested and dedicated people join our family at the Okinawan Karate "Way Place" in Poquoson. Sensei Harris is very happy to have such great students come and train in the old ways of Karate and Kobudo.
