Dr. Nielsen grew up raising cattle on a farm in Kingston, Washington. She fell in love with Montana while attending Carroll College. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in both Biology and Classical Studies from Carroll. Shannon then graduated from Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2011.

Shannon is proud to call the Deer Lodge Valley home and to raise her children, dogs, horses, and cattle here. Shannon enjoys spending time with her family, horseback riding, gardening, fishing, and hiking. She is committed to carrying on the tradition of great customer service and quality patient care that has been the cornerstone of the Clark Fork Veterinary Clinic since it was established in 1961.
Services
We provide a continually expanding complement of companion animal veterinary services. Our current services include: digital x-ray (including dental), ultrasound, dentistry, soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, in-house lab work and diagnostics, hospitalization, boarding, preventative care, end of life care (we will even come to your home), and weight and dietary consultations.
We recommend an annual wellness exam for your horse companion to make sure they are healthy and have no underlying issues we need to resolve. Systems we assess in an exam include: eyes, respiratory, cardiac, skin, mouth, hooves and gastrointestinal. Dentistry is extremely important for our horse's overall health, as their teeth affect everything else.
Our annual community service event for the past 3 years was cleaning the Tri-County Fairgrounds Exhibit Hall. We clean for a few hours, have some team fun and thoroughly enjoy helping out our community get ready for fair. Through the American Veterinary Medical Foundation's Veterinary Care Charitable Fund, our hospital is able to help animals rescued from abuse, neglect and the pets of clients facing personal hardships.
The following companies are who we recommend and use on a daily basis here at the Clark Fork Veterinary Clinic. This is our preferred third party financing company. CareCredit is different from a regular credit card. It helps you pay for out-of-pocket expenses not covered by medical insurance by extending special financing options.

I think they have some great vets on staff, but we just can't seem to rely on them to help us in a timely fashion when we're having animal troubles. We've had two livestock die recently. We have no idea if the vet could've prevented the deaths, because they could never come out and help us within like 10 hours of initial contact. I get that things are busy, but...priorities seem to be lacking from my perspective.

My dog busted her nail sometime yesterday and the service here was phenomenal and fast to get her fixed up and taken care of. All of the staff are incredibly trustworthy and kind. I would trust them with my life! Shannon is an incredible human & she does incredible work. All of her staff are just as lovely and helpful as she is!! If you have any animals of your own I would highly recommend Clark Fork Vet for anything your furry friend may need.

Critical: Quality
Went in with my cat with bad tooth. They pulled it but didn’t close it. Left a hole clear up in his sinuses which cause food to go up there which caused him never to heal. Took him back 4 times they never figured it out. I lost my precious baby. They killed him! I should have sued for malpractice!

The team here saved our beloved dogs life. We are so grateful for the quick action and care that Dr. Nielsen and Dr. Thomas provided. We were passing through town and they got us in right away for an emergency situation. They acted quickly, were very professional, gave us lots of updates, and took care of her for an extended time. Many thanks to all of the staff, they helped us through a really scary and difficult situation. <3

Very poor communication between the four veterinarians. Went in several times about my cat. Had to explain every time what was happening after surgery. No one cared enough to really look at what I was saying. They pulled a few abscesses teeth, left a hole between to nasal cavity. Food got up behind eye and caused infection. After 5 visits and no help I took him to another vet. It was too late

My healthy 14 month old german shepherd went in to get neutered. He came home around 2:30pm and passed away less than 2 hours later. They did an autopsy and said that he passed away from internal bleeding. A simple neuter should have never led to internal bleeding and him passing away so tragically. They said that he must have had some type of blood or clotting disorder- however shouldn’t they have noticed this during surgery and closing him up? I talked to another vet about this, and he said that a neuter in a healthy dog should never lead to any type of internal bleeding. Clark Fork did not

Amazing. Wonderful people to work with. My dog hasn't been to the vet in 5 years and I feel like many other places look down on us and make me feel guilty. We live near billings and vets tend to be unreasonably costly. Clark Fork vet and team were amazing and the prize was reasonable. Thank you all for help and making me feel better about making my pet healthy and happier.
