Services
Once you have your ideas of things to do near us, you'll find there may be time for longer drives to Hilo and Kailua-Kona. Of course, many guests over the years have also built in a day or two for in-house massage, classes at the inn, and napping on the lanai. Sometimes guests that are only staying with us during their visit to the island may choose an around the island drive.
Kilauea 'Iki is an amazing four mile loop that takes you down one side of the crater, across it's steaming floor, and up the other side of the crater. The Kahuku Unit of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. It offers both a short hike to the top of the pictured cinder cone and a longer hike to an ancient pit crater with a native forest on its floor.
This old cane road is a great drive which starts with a stop at the Punalu'u Bakery for a Lilikoi Malasada. There's a blind spot in the road about a half mile in, a few bumps, and some potholes, so take it slow. Catch it on a good day and enjoy the mountain vistas, the green pastures, and an occasional coastal view.
When planning for our meals at Kalaekilohana Inn and Retreat, we think concentrically about the food we eat. We estimate we locally source over 70% of what we serve. Fresh food grown locally means that when you choose us for your stay, you're contributing to our entire community, and that makes everyone feel good!.
When staying with us at Kalaekilohana Inn & Retreat, you may want to incorporate some of these "dining out" spots as you travel around the island. When you are at the Volcano, we highly recommend Thai Thai in Volcano Village. Take an early dinner before the crowds arrive and then head back to the park to see the glow from the lava lake.

Fantastic place to stay.
Purpose-built as a B&B, with large rooms and comfortable lanai.
Fully caring and committed owners who also cook dinner (extra $), so a truly contained retreat.

Our 4 day stay here was outrageous. The hosts were full of local knowledge, the food was 5 star, and the location perfect. The rooms, common areas and front porch were well done. Thanks again for a great Hawaiian experience.

Kenny and Kilohana are both amazing hosts who go above and beyond to make sure their guests have the absolute best time. The property itself is gorgeous and built by Kenny and Kilohana to be a luxurious guest house. Kenny is a great chef that offers dinner and you would be foolish to not take him up on it every night that you are there. Kilohana made sure we were well informed about what to do in the area and even let us use some trekking poles for a hike. When we come back to the Big Island, Kalaehilohana will be our number one choice of places to stay.

We had absolutely the best experience. These gentlemen are some of the warmest hosts with whom I've ever had the pleasure to stay. Kenny's cooking was consistently wonderful, and he and Kilo basically helped us plan every stop of our trip, while giving us insight into the local culture, food, and even the best place to see a highland Koa tree. The house is beautiful, the rooms palatial, and the lanai a perfect place to sit and listen to the wind and look out on a wide rambling expanse of stars. We were so sad to leave. These guys have it all figured out.

We stayed here about a year ago, and I recently realized I never left a review. This place was terrific. We were the only guests there at the time, but we found the hosts to be great company. It's far enough off the main road to be quiet and peaceful, but close enough to allow visiting some other points of interest, shops, etc. Or you can head further into the countryside, and hike along the coast to the Green Sand Beach - definitely worth doing.

We had an amazing 3-night stay at Kalaekilohana Inn and Retreat. What a special place to be during our honeymoon on the Big Island! Our hosts Kenny and Kilohana were excellent. I will never forget Chef Kenny's amazing breakfasts each day with locally sourced food. Everything was delicious and gourmet at the highest level. Kilohana was so helpful advising us on our daily itinerary, including special tips for our hike to Green Sand Beach. I was grateful for the cold drinks and snacks always available throughout the day, as well as the use of a cooler, ice pack, and beach towels for our daily trips

Kalaekilohana is truly an extraordinary experience and we had a very special spiritual connection that cannot be put into words. My soul was at peace as soon as we drove onto the property. From that point on we continued to feel at peace and felt a deeper connection to our inner selves.
I know you said that you can't take credit for that but we disagree. Certainly, the energy at Kalaekilohana is amazing on it's own. However, the two of you were put there for a reason. Not only do you both have hearts of gold, but the purest of spirits and beautiful energy that exudes upon others. Words cannot

An absolute perfect getaway. Gracious hosts, 5-star food, and the most beautiful scenery. If you want peace, tranquility, and healthy, delicious food all in the best company, then this is it. It defines tranquility. If you need to unwind or recharge, this is heaven. And the hosts are very respectful of privacy. They are there as much or as little as you like, and are great company. Having a bottle of wine on the lanai can not be overrated. You will sleep well, eat well, and feel great by the time you leave.

Go out of your way to stay here. It is everything you could ever ask for from a B&B and more. All bases are covered & everything is thoughtful and luxurious.
