Unit Building Services began in 1972 as a merit shop, design-build and general contractor. Steve Schmidlin assumed the leadership role as President in 1993. Steve continued to grow Unit - a company built on the integrity and values of his father, Tom Schmidlin, a residential and commercial builder, and the legacy of his grandfather, P.K. Solon, a residential builder and developer.
The growth of the company is attributed to the increased emphasis on the design-build process and customer service. The company is 100% owned by the Schmidlin family. Unit has a strong background in designing and building industrial, office, medical and retail buildings for business owners, professionals, and developers who want personal service and a single source of accountability for their mid-size project.

Our mission is to be the tri-state's premier design-build contractor within our target market. We place a very high value on listening to and understanding our customer's needs, and then delivering a creatively designed, well-constructed building on time, and within budget. Our focus on the mid-size market means every project is important enough to engage our top people.
My father, Tom, was a custom homebuilder in my younger years. On weekends I would help him lay out sites for excavation. In 1973, Dad partnered with the Neyers to start UNIT Building Services. I worked in the summers as a laborer and carpenter learning all aspects of constructing a building.
My Construction Management degree exposed me to Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Architecture, Mechanical and Electrical Design, Scheduling, Accounting and Business Management.With this education and experience I took a strong interest in Design Build Contracting under the tutelage of Don Neyer.
