Lake Placid Martial arts was originally founded as a traditional Okinawan Karate school in the 1980s. Sensei Peter Peck founded the original school and taught traditional Karate to adults and children for almost 30 years. Hundreds of students benefitted from the excellent instruction and student centered approach for all of those years.

Sensei Peck became interested in "I love Kickboxing" and opened a franchise in Clifton Park three years ago. It became difficult for him to operate a dojo in Lake Placid and a business in Clifton Park at the same time, so it became apparent that the Lake Placid dojo would be terminated.

The most widely accepted version of the origins of hapkido is that it was founded by Choi Yong-sul. This is really no reliable information on Choi's life, but it is generally reported that he developed the system by combining native Korean fighting methods with Japanese daito-ryu aikijujutsu. The circular-motion principle directs practitioners to gain and impart momentum by moving in a circular manner.
