After finishing school like so many of our employees now, I decided to take the winter off, move to Tahoe and ski. I rented a closet, literally, in a house on the west shore of Lake Tahoe and set out to find work. I really wanted to work at Squaw Valley. I would have taken any position available, fortunately I landed a job with lift maintenance.

Beginner needing boots. I tried to use the online appointment system, could not find openings for anyone for weeks out - so I drove 45 minutes to set up an appointment in-person. Store was not busy... cashier/associate responded "you need to use the online tool."
Me: "I tried that with no luck so I've come here in person to make the appointment."
Her: "Well, that's how we set up appointments... -pause-".
I started to say thanks and simply leave... after a longer awkward pause she offered to "let me see if I can help you" - appointment set

Had John at Granite Chief fit my "plug" boot that I did not buy at Granite Chief. John was very patient with me as I came back for him to tweak it several times. He even demonstrated to me where I thought something should be done was wrong and why. He got it right and I am very pleased with the outcome. Price for the work done was very reasonable.

I recently noticed that a canting bolt was missing from my ski boot so I brought it in to Granite Chief where I have all of my boot work done. Herb took great care of me and found a bolt to replace my missing bolt. It was not an easy task but Herb didn't give up until he found a match. Gunnar and Darron have taken care of my boot needs for many years and I highly recommend them for any kind of boot work that you may need! Thanks guys!!

I came here to rent a snowboard and some boots, which was a great price but when I went and did some runs, the back strap on one of the strap was not catching and basically I could not use the board anymore. I went back to Granite Chief and explained what happened and they gave me a full refund! great place to rent and friendly staff. Highly recommend!

Needed a basic binding adjustment for new ski boots. Same size boot, no drilling required. They said they'd be ready first thing in the morning. Came in at 12:00pm the next day and was told they weren't ready and wouldn't be until 3pm. Came in at 4:30pm they still weren't ready and had to wait another 15 minutes. They charged $60 for a service I've paid $30 for at other shops. No one ever apologized or thanked me for my patience or my business.

I'm very happy to have heard about Gunner as a boot-fitter and his experience fitting dancers who also ski.
Despite his packed schedule, Gunner was super kind to fit me in pretty last minute to double-check things with my boots. I'm also very appreciative for his recommendation to do a light heat molding to help out my right foot which is arguably the troubled child due to prior injury and being a bit bigger than my left.
In terms of the shop more generally, I'm not sure if it would be my first choice for purchases outside of an end of season sale solely on account of price points

This shop is a quick stop off the highway to pick up a few last min items for ttitd. Dont bring them your dusty old POS bike and expect they are gonna fix it up, that thing is probably a few steps away from being trash. Just fix it when you get to the playa! Or better yet rent one from the org. This is a high quality bike shop, in the summer time, with friendly and knowledgeable staff! they have some amazing mountain bikes and all the gear you need. pick up some extra lights, bike patch kits, tubes and anything else you might have forgotten. Support local businesses!

Employees are fairly polite and helpful, but there are significant standardization issues between what each of them advertises. My husband and I were told that if we demo skis with Granite Chief, we could apply the price of the demos towards new skis. They did NOT say, however, that the demo price would apply only to full price skis AND that only two full days of demos would towards a new pair of skis! We've rented demo skis at least six times! NO ONE TOLD US THIS. We were also told that if we bought skis from them that bindings would be half off!

Went in to rent demo skis because I was having a lot of trouble skiing with my new boots (which I bought somewhere else). Mike asked to look at my boots first. He really took the time to assess the fit. He made some adjustments and really wanted me to try that first. OMG HUGE difference. I was back to skiing again. I cannot thank Mike enough!!!!! Thank you

Went here for some custom ski boot work (molding with toe cap, footbed, etc). Darren was super helpful, kind and educated. I dropped off my boats, got quick foot analysis. I returned an hour later and the boot was ready to go. Finished with quick 15 minute custom mold.

I needed ski boots urgently after a failed experiment. It was January 1. Although I had to wait some time to be helped, I could tell the boot fitters were taking time to make sure folks' boots fit just right. Some were getting new boots, some getting older boots fixed up. Ashley arrived and helped me out. She asked my background, measured my feet, asked a few other questions, sized me up and picked a boot. She was sure it was the right one. I wasn't as sure since it felt a bit tight. She got a couple others for me to try anyway. In the end she was totally right. That boot is the right

Went into G.C. and started looking at new ski boots, one salesperson told me to come see Gunner and that he was the best person for the job, as I have had so many troubles getting new ski boots. One appointment later and me and my girlfriend got setup perfectly. All day ski comfort thanks to the man himself, Gunner!

I had a very positive experience buying my 1st pair of powder skis here towards the end of the season (40% MSRP, timing is everything!). The man who helped me select my skis was extremely helpful, he was very knowledgeable and just really sweet and nice. A gentleman for sure. Luckily for me, I was able to ride my new skis on powder 3 times before the end of the season! I am very happy with my new powder skis.
Prior to my ski purchase, I purchased a pair of ski pants that were also slightly discounted. I am also quite happy with the ski pants.

I find Granite Chief to have a wide variety of ski equipment, clothing and accessories that more than meets my needs. Brands I like that are usually in stock Spider, Roxy, ArcTeryx, Marmot, 686...descent assortment of goggles, skis, boots poles...9 yards...plus base layers, insulators and outerwear....some casual winter wear though not what I'm usually looking for...
RENTALS:
In addition to friendly staff and the array of seasonal gear the best draw by far is the kid's season rental pkg - boots and skis $150 through May of the next year.

Granite Chief is a solid ski and outdoor store. The owner clearly cares about his business and they've done a great job of threading the proverbial ski store needle over the years:
* The gear and fashion stays on trend and rarely slip into close-out yuck.
* Sure prices are high, but they're not stupid.
* The staff is knowledgeable and not too gnar to help you without intimidation.
* It's a place you can go to to BUY and also a place worthwhile for SHOP mode too.
I've been doing seasonal ski leases for kids for ten years+ at GC and they've always been fair priced
