After working various jobs, Bernard enlisted in the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War. He earned the rank of Corporal while serving abroad and was honorably discharged. Bernard returned home and began working for the Grant County Highway Department for almost 40 years until retiring in 1995. Being very proud of his service to his country, he became a member of the Lancaster VFW.
