The Eye Institute of South Jersey, PC, established in 1995 by Board Certified Ophthalmologist, David R. Pernelli, M.D. provides personalized, specialty eye care for the residents of Vineland, Millville, Bridgeton and the surrounding South Jersey communities. David R Pernelli, MD, founder of the Eye Institute of South Jersey, PC is a board certified Ophthalmologist. After receiving his undergraduate degree at Washington College in Washington, PA, Dr. Pernelli obtained his medical degree from Hahnemann University, in Philadelphia, PA. He completed his internship and residency at Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center in Aurora, Colorado as an officer in the U.S. Army.

While a cataract may be present at birth or develop as a result of trauma to the eye, in 90% of cases it is simply the progressive clouding of the lens that occurs with the maturing process. Cataracts typically develop slowly over time and you may experience a gradual and painless decrease in vision.

LASIK surgery corrects refractive error conditions such as hyperopia (farsightedness), myopia (nearsightedness) and astigmatism. During LASIK surgery Dr. Pernelli uses an excimer laser to reshape the cornea so light is focused more accurately on the retina resulting in clearer vision.

For most patients this life changing procedure can be the key to restoring more natural, youthful vision and some patients report vision better than they have ever been able to achieve with glasses or contact lenses.Traditional LASIK does not correct for presbyopia, the need for reading glasses, that most adults experience around the age of 40.
