I was drawn to the psychotherapy profession by a desire to have positive, fulfilling and healing relationships with family members and loved ones. In my early adulthood, I recognized that my gift for logic and analysis, while helpful in my initial aerospace/manufacturing engineering endeavors, wasn't enough to have the life I desired.
If you are seeking therapy to deal with a traumatic or difficult experience that occurred in adulthood and you are comfortable with emotions, therapy may be very brief (e.g., 2-6 sessions). On the other hand, if you are seeking therapy for ongoing, repetitive traumas that occurred throughout your childhood and at the hands of someone you relied on for support and survival, you should expect therapy to be lengthy, perhaps years.
