Our Mission is to educate the public about issues related to recycling, solid waste reduction methods, littering and illegal dumping; as well as encouraging people to take pride in their communities by becoming involved in clean-ups and recycling, increasing the quality of life for residents of all ages and generations to come.
Services
The Perry County Waste Reduction & Recycling office is located at 2231 State Route 13 in New Lexington, beside the PerCo Recycling Center. Matt Reed serves as Director of the program. Other employees include Mike Phillips, Litter Crew Supervisor; and Katrina Carpenter, Education Specialist. Elizabeth Biggers serves as our Perry County Environmental Law Enforcement Deputy.
There are several drop-off locations throughout Perry County! Including the Village of Somerset's curbside recycling (see Resource Pg for more information). Materials placed in these trailers or buildings are taken to Perry County Recycling Facility. Once at Recycling Center, recyclable items are sorted, compressed into bales and sent on to be re-made into new products!
Periodically, we hold community workshops to encourage creative REUSE & COMPOSTING and more! This enables local high school students to compete with their classmates to receive a scholarship by recording interview with an elder & writing an essay on the topic of "Defining REUSE" Today Compared to Yesterday.
The Natural Resource Conservation Service and Soil and Water Conservation District staff have given technical assistance to many Perry. Our Mission is to educate the public about issues related to recycling, solid waste reduction methods, littering and illegal dumping; as. In 2013, PerCo, Inc. secured all funding to begin a massive renovation & addition to the existing recycling center.
Composting is simply the process of allowing organic materials like food waste (our table scraps, minus the bones, meat and dairy products) and yard waste (grass, leaves, weeds and brush) to decompose and be returned back to the soil where it can be beneficial to gardens for added organic and nutrient matter.
