Sometimes we know happiness and peace in life. At other times, life hurts! Whether your pain began with loss, illness, injury, or unwanted thoughts and emotions, I will work with you to build a path from suffering to well being. Over a 35 year period I have offered psychotherapy in private practice, taught psychology in a medical school, served as CEO of a non-profit behavioral health agency.
Through these experiences, I have developed a broad set of change tools to offer, drawing from the Mindsight, CBT, trauma focused, attachment and DBT traditions of Western psychotherapy. I also offer a variety of Buddhist derived interventions, based on my own 40 year practice of Buddhism. Combining Western therapeutic methods with calm abiding, insight and compassion practice can be an especially potent recipe for growth and healing.

First we need a map! We will begin by looking at what is troubling you and what changes you would like to make in your life. I'll ask you to complete some forms and we'll review your history together. This evaluation usually takes one or two sessions. Based on what we learn together, we will identify goals for your psychotherapy.
Why should I work with a psychologist? Isn't it better to solve my own problems? People in Western society tend to be very independent. It can be great to solve our own problems or forge our own path to a goal. The question is, how well has this worked for you so far?
If you are experiencing intense, painful emotions, negative, repetitive thoughts, abusive situations, or an ongoing "stuckness" in life, and if nothing you have done on your own has helped, I hope you will seek professional guidance.Life is short and suffering is, well, suffering. A good way to exercise your independence is to take charge of your care, but taking charge does not mean you have to do it all by yourself!

Because I am interested in ways to end suffering and to establish flourishing, I have studied both Western psychology and Eastern meditation for many years. My meditation training has been primarily within the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, including the completion of a three-year retreat under the close supervision of a qualified traditional teacher.
A s a meditator, you know that Buddhism is a well-developed system for realizing our full potential - called enlightenment. Buddhism claims that our natural, inborn state is a clear and free awareness that is wise, joyful, and compassionate in nature. Buddhist teachings present methods for accessing that inborn state, using meditation, visualization, and constant practice in daily life.
Payment is required at each appointent, including any balance you owe (co-pay, deductible, self- pay). I do not allow patients to carry a balance owed because it can complicate our relationship and our work together. I prefer payment by check. Sessions conducted through HIPPA compliant video conference are not covered by insurance, and must be paid privately.
