I have always loved the story of an elderly gentleman who had burial plots on both coasts. The family kept after him to tell them where he wanted to be buried. He thought for a moment and then said, 'Surprise me.' We walk a fine line between knowing what we want to happen at our own funeral and forcing some hard decisions on our family.
Conditions change, situations become altered and suddenly the family cannot fulfill all of the requests we have made. Many a family lives with long-term guilt over failing a loved one in this area. The answer to this is to make general plans. Have a family meeting so everyone has a voice in the plans and understands what is to happen, and then make clear that it will be all right if changes have to be made.

Services
I have worked in the funeral business since my senior year at East Rutherford High School in 1981. My first career was in radio, working at WBBO in Forest City, WXIK-WOHS in Shelby, and WCAB in Rutherfordton.
My first employment in funeral service was with Horton Landreth at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home, and I worked and lived at both Rogers & Breece and Jernigan-Warren Funeral Homes in Fayetteville while attending the funeral service education program at Fayetteville Technical Community College.

Dr. Phil Dunford, a Presbyterian Pastor did the service for my father in 1998. Phil had asked me and my brothers it it would be okay if my father's alcoholism was mentioned during the service. Mark, Bryan and I agreed that it was okay and we encouraged him to do that. Phil has been rather amusing, candid and interesting, minister during his time here, and his words that day at my father's graveside have crossed my mind many times since 1998.
As the cliche goes, the only stupid questions are those unasked. Most people have never planned a funeral, and it's a topic that many people avoid, even though they might be curious. I've answered some of the more common questions we receive below, and I encourage you to send me any questions you might have about funerals, funeral directors, and services.
