Over the years as a probate and estate planning lawyer, I have seen a myriad of families, ranging from the families with proper estate planning in place to families who did not think estate planning was for them. With the different families, what I noticed was the difference in their demeanor. Those with estate planning in place, were at peace, relieved.
For example, we have single mom Sandy. If all Sandy left was a will, and within that will Sandy bequeathed her home, jewelry, and personal items to her 13-year-old daughter, the daughter would have to go through the court supervised proceeding called probate, pay probate fees, then take her inheritance.

Your divorce decree overrides any agreements or arrangements made prior. As an unmarried person or newly married person, you have a new estate. With this transition, you may also want to reconsider who you have assigned as an agent for your finances and/or health. If you already have an estate plan, you may be able to update those documents or it may make sense to draft new documents.
I hope the content on this website was a helpful overview on the estate planning process. Of course, no two families are the same and each family has a unique dynamic for which they will want to provide. I would love to talk through your family's unique situation and provide guidance where I can. Please feel free to reach out using the form and I will get back to you shortly.
