Growing up, Gregg would take backpacking trips through the Sierras with his dad. Those trips were his first real exposure to all of the natural beauty California has to offer. He pursued an education at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, receiving a B.S. in Ornamental Horticulture. After graduation, Gregg returned to work in construction for his brother's general contracting company, Hoffman & Associates.
His various responsibilities included framing, masonry, concrete, plumbing, stucco, carpentry and landscaping. The heavy construction experience Gregg gained during this job would serve him well in his future enterprises. Gregg and Gina married in 1994, and by 1995 they were ready to embark on two big adventures: starting a family and owning their own landscaping business.
