Handi-Crafters
Handi-Crafters runs one of the largest employment and disability focused support service programs in Southeast Pennsylvania. Each year we help over 400 individuals to access rewarding employment opportunities in the community and in our Skill Development Center.

We achieve our goals through partnerships with great employers and the acquisition of work contracts with businesses who choose socially responsible outsourcing to meet their production, assembly, kitting and packaging needs. We offer a continuum of support programs which includes housing solutions and retirement options.
Services
Handi-Crafters was founded in 1961 in Downingtown, Pennsylvania by a group of parents who were seeking a direction in life after high school for their differently-abled children.

The committee was forward thinking and concentrated on establishing the concept around meaningful work and employment, a crucial void in the lives of their children given they would leave school without any work-related skills and seemed destined to be cut off from the opportunity of becoming employed. Thus, the vision of a supported workshop program was opened and serving Chester County.
Handi-Crafters offers a continuum of services to support the needs of individuals who are differently-abled. Our programs and services present opportunities and options in the areas of meaningful employment to housing, retirement and skill development. The initial step for individuals entering our programs is a vocational evaluation to determine their needs, interest and potential.
At Handi-Crafters, we understand that every person with a disability is different, with different strengths, barriers, needs and capabilities. Our number one goal is to help each of our clients acquire his/her highest level of vocational and economic self-sufficiency and independence through meaningful employment.
Most individuals who come to Handi-Crafters have had little or no work experience. At Handi-Crafters they are given the opportunity to learn and develop good work skills and habits through on-the-job training and coaching. Handi-Crafters Skill Development Center performs work in the area of assembly, sorting, shrink-wrapping, gluing, drilling, collating, packaging, display making, mailings and shipping and more.
Each year we help over 80 individuals with barriers to work access rewarding competitive employment opportunities that promote their independence and fulfill their employment goals. Through our Community Employment Program we consult with potential employees to evaluate their aspirations and employment goals.

If I could give negative stars I would. My son has worked there for a total of 6 months and technically they don't want him anymore. No behavior problems, he has autism and gets distracted. This might be a great place for some individuals but wouldn't recommend it for people with autism. They don't know what to expect or how to work with them.

I was just treated horribly here. I had scheduled a tour for my son to go here and when I arrived I was told to take a seat that no one was here to help me yet. I sat for 10 minutes when I asked if someone could help me, I was told to hold on and that the receptionist "can't read minds."
It was not until another gentleman came in that the person I was there to see was called for him, not me. When he came out, Oliver, I asked him if he was expecting me. He indicated that he was. So not only did he know I was supposed to be there, in 10 minutes he had not bothered to greet me in the

Central location, helpful staff. Offers employment and activities for people with physical and mental disabilities. I have found that advocate for the entire family, if necessary, not JUST the client. Thanks Handicrafters!! 😊🤗🙏🏾

This organization is very helpful when it comes to people with certain disabilities, they give people with disabilities a safe place to work and expressed their selves, however the staff can be a bit unfriendly and unsociable at times. They don't communicate and they don't even smile when you come to pick up a consumer it's like they're robots just there to clock in-and-out to do a job. But to every down side their is always an upside, they have a 2nd building called the Bentley Building and the staff their are wonderful. The total opposite of the first building.
