FIRST MSP was formed in 2000 for the express purpose of training new and re-entering riders to ride safely and to secure their motorcycle license through the NYSMSP Road Test Waiver Program to enjoy our wonderful sport. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation's proven training systems have brought comprehensive and standardized rider training to more than two million participants since 1973.

Basic Rider Course is the entry point for most riders, offering training in motorcycle familiarization, risk understanding and management, and basic riding skills including straight line riding, turning, shifting, stopping, and emergency skills in turning, swerving and stopping. Additional training opportunities offered through MSF include the Basic Rider Course 2 Skills Practice and the Basic Skills 2 License Waiver.
Services
To pass, and receive the NYS Road Test Waiver, students must successfully complete an online E-Course, a classroom session including a written Knowledge Test, as well as completing the objectives of 14 riding exercises and passing a riding skills test. If you are 16-18 years old or have restrictions on your drivers license, check with NYS Department of Motor Vehicles regulations regarding motorcycle licensing.
Formerly known as the Experienced Rider Course, this program is for licensed riders with experience on the road and comfort with their skills and motorcycles. You will use YOUR motorcycle for this course. This course is intended to improve skills such as slow speed control, cornering judgment, and emergency control and procedures, as well as attempting to eliminate some of the bad habits picked up through on-road riding.
You must be 18 or older, have held a valid motorcycle permit for at least 1 year, and possess some street riding skills. You must bring your own motorcycle, with the NYS Motorcycle Registration, Insurance Card, and current NYS Inspection Sticker. The Basic Rider Course 2 License Waiver is offered as a 1-day class on Saturday or Sunday, from approximately 8 am to 6 pm at our Groton location only.
Many new riders are anxious about what it takes to ride a motorcycle. In addition, many have never driven a standard shift vehicle. We offer private lessons for individuals or small groups, to address these concerns and help those individuals get a "step-up" on the MSF Basic Rider Course. Private lessons include: motorcycle familiarization and other basic skills including clutch control, throttle control, braking, shifting and cornering.
