James River Cellars started as a hobby and grew out of control! While on the hunt for the perfect Virginia Gewrztraminer, Ray Lazarchic decided that it may be easier to just make his own! He planted the vineyard on 20 acres of his farm in Montpelier, VA. The winery was open to the public in 2001 and is now owned and operated by Ray's daughter, Mitzi, and her husband, James.
Between Mitzi and James, our owners, they have over three decades of experience in the wine industry. They are both alumni from the College of William & Mary and Mitzi continued on to the University of Virginia to complete her PhD in Pharmacology. James' highly discerning palate enables him to create over 15 unique styles of Virginia wine.

Well first its distance from the parking lot to a reception of cold, sterile & general unfriendliness, & indifference from the hostess, who waved her hand at the fridge for a very limited & a rather unappetizing assortment of snacks.
The only saving grace was the young lady who poured.

The winery has many options of tasting wines and wines to buy. They have an upstairs seating area as well as outside areas with music and very comfortable seating. Vendors are located outside, if you need food. So, give James River winery a try. Average coat is $13 for 4 glasses.(reds & whites) Try the slushies, very tasty.

Visited this winery after visiting Cooper a few weekends ago. Cooper recommended to go there next but from Cooper this place was a letdown. Maybe we would have enjoyed this place better on its own but the wines did not compare and the ambiance was dull and lacking.
If you are in the Richmond area and look for a great winery to visit invest the extra time in driving out further west.
Wines were average but nothing special.
