I grew up on a farm in Pike County, Illinois, the second of three children and the only girl. I was active on the basketball and volleyball teams and was valedictorian of my class at Barry High School. I then attended McKendree University and was a member of the women's basketball team. I graduated with honors, with a bachelor of science degree in biology, and continued my education at Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine.
