As the preferred funeral home among families who expect a little more, we provide Charleston families with a premier level of service that is simply not possible in large firms. Your family will work with the same team members from the very first meeting until the service has concluded. We remain in touch with families long after a service has taken place and consider those we have served our dear friends.

Our expertise and caring are extended to all families, regardless of religious affiliation. Our team's experience in handling services of all backgrounds and religious traditions ensures that your family will receive the highest level of caring service. As Charleston's only Catholic-owned funeral home, we are equipped to provide unparalleled guidance to families planning a Catholic service.
Services
James A. "Jimmy" McAlister III, a fourth generation Funeral Director and Embalmer founded James A. McAlister Funerals & Cremation in 1997. Jimmy's great-grandfather, John McAlister, was one of the first licensed embalmers in South Carolina who began his funeral home in the late 1800s. Although a strong legacy of funeral service existed, Jimmy instead chose a career in finance following his graduation from the University of South Carolina.
Few choices will impact your journey through the loss of your loved one more than that initial choice: selecting the funeral home. This one act alone can be the best or worst part of the process of dealing with the death. When making this choice, the least important concern should be the size of the firm, or number of locations they have.
Staff members of James A. McAlister Funerals & Cremation are caring and experienced professionals who understand that each family is unique and has personal requests and traditions. These requests and traditions are of utmost importance to our staff of licensed funeral directors. Jimmy McAlister, or "Jimbo" to his many friends, is owner and operator of the James A. McAlister Funeral Home.
We are conveniently located on Charleston's famous "Auto Mile", next door to Bessinger's BBQ and across the highway from Palmetto Ford. We are close to all area hospitals and cemeteries. Our parking lot features 150 spaces, and our building is completely one-level and ADA compliant. The chapel seats approximately 275 in comfortable pews and our lobby area is a spacious gathering area.
Most of us plan ahead in life. We plan for our wedding, our children's education, family vacations, and other significant expected life events. We also plan for the unexpected events of life by purchasing home, auto and medical insurance. Understanding the benefits of pre-planning has prompted many to take the step to plan their own arrangements.

I highly recommend this group of wonderful people to anyone. It’s a one-location, small organization that immediately made me feel comfortable and heard when planning my father’s cremation and memorial service. The individualized attention was incredible. I truly felt welcomed into their family.
Rodney Pendell was available day and night to address any questions or issues. He worked with me to ensure the obituary and service accurately represented the humor and personality of my Dad. Michelle and Tripp were fantastic and so supportive. You feel the positive energy the second you enter the

Apprentice Tripp Clayton and President Jimmy McAlister were a pleasure to deal with. Their attention to detail made a difficult time much easier. Located in the heart of West Ashley, they offer ample parking in the rear. Professional, courteous and attentive.
